I just came across this video and wanted to share my thoughts. When I was 23, my fiance died as a result of his drinking and driving. He was 27. He hit a power pole doing about 90 mph. He was the only fatality. While losing him was so difficult, I am so glad no one else lost their lives. Just recently, my step-son died from the effects of alcohol. He was 28. In this country, we treat alcohol as if it isn't a dangerous drug. DUI's are considered a traffic offense and drunk drivers are released from jail in a few hours if they have a ride home. They may lose their license if they don't agree to the breathalyzer testing, but the gravity and seriousness of their drinking and driving, just doesn't get the attention is should.
Shoplifters are arrested and my serve jail time, which doesn't necessarily cost anyone's life, just the loss of money for the retailer or store, but no one is physically hurt, (in most cases.) Yet, there are people who have had several DUI's and still have their driver's license. You see it over and over on these videos, the person has one of more DUI's and they are again being pulled over. It is that the punishment is not serious enough that they just continue to drive? And many who face prosecution, will plea bargain by agreeing to go to AA for 90 meetings and get a card signed. Big deal. Self help meetings ran by their peers with no real help. They don't want to be there, but they know that by agreeing to go, it could mean keeping their license, not having to pay fines or do any jail time.
Driving a few thousand pounds of metal down the highway at high speeds while drinking is dangerous, reckless, and irresponsible. Walk, call an Uber, taxi, or call a friend. It's not like we didn't get this education in school.
There needs to be stiffer penalties for those who drink and drive.
The death toll from alcohol is equal to the death toll of illicit opiate overdoses. While not everyone who drinks dies instantly as they might from fentanyl overdose, the deaths from alcohol consumption and DUI fatalities is equal. A drug is a drug is a drug and alcohol just happens to be legal for anyone over 21 to buy. It's in most households and when mixed with other respiratory depressants, can lead to lethal consequences.
You rarely hear any talk about the dangers of alcohol. And while I know how absolutely dangerous illicit drugs can be, alcohol is just as dangerous. Why we don't see more education and talk about alcohol, easy answer...Too many people making a shit load of money off the sale of alcohol.
I could go on and on, but if you are going to drink and be out, get a ride home. You can pick your damn car up later. Talk to your teens and young adults about using Uber, safe ride share programs, or let them know they can call you. I made sure my teens knew they could call me if they had been drinking or their friends were drinking and couldn't safely drive home. I would rather they call me and get home safely, than have them worry about me punishing them because they made a poor choice to drink underage.
And parents, if you choose to go out drinking, be responsible enough to get home safely yourself by calling for a ride or having a plan ready if you do drink. Your kids will not only learn through your good choices, but they will have their parents safely at home at the end of the night.
I lost 2 people I loved very much due to alcohol and as an RN, I saw the damage from alcohol first hand.
I enjoy having a few cocktails myself, but I will not get behind the wheel. I did it once after my fiance died and I was pulled over by the police, a very kind cop who let me sit in a parking lot for a few hours while he ended his shift and did paperwork. This was in 1990 before computers and dashcams. I could of gone to jail and rightly so, but I was about to start nursing school and maybe he felt sorry for me. My fiance had just passed a few weeks prior to me being pulled over.
Have a plan before you go out drinking. If you have a problem with drinking, take an Uber, ask someone to drive you, get your alcohol delivered. No need to go out anymore when you can Door Dash a 12 pack. And if you know someone who has a problem with drinking, be kind, offer to help them if they need it, give them your number so they can call you if they need a ride home. And understand that trying to stop drinking doesn't just happen overnight. The withdrawals can be dangerous and the anxiety and fear they feel is real. Be supportive and compassionate.
I don't know if this will help anyone or reach anyone, and I'm sorry my post is long, but I guess I had a lot to say. Stay safe and stay alive.

A long post, yes. But spot on. Reading this made me realize the number of people I have known that have passed away were the cause can be attributed to alcohol issues. At least four good friends of mine over the years have died way to young due to either accidents or just alcohol abuse related health issues. My grandfather had a serious drinking problem and eventually took his own life. I have also seen it wreck marriages and families of people I know.

I'll never forget the day, July 25th 2013, the sheriff's department knocked on my mother's door. I was asleep, I heard her scream, I ran to the door and was told my fiance, Christopher Pierce was found deceased at 2am. He had fallen asleep at the wheel on his way home from work and hit a tree. He was killed on impact. Our son was five months old, and asleep in the other room. I had just seen him the night before, kissed him goodbye. We were supposed to go to the Old Port and fishing on the pier the next day as it was his first day off all summer. Our son is eight now. He looks so much like his dad! Never go to bed angry, always kiss your loved ones goodbye, and thank God for every day you have together! We love you Chris!

Having been a Paramedic in EMS and a police officer for many years I am sometimes haunted by the countless images of tragedy that I have seen. Countless last breaths, telling loved ones that a member of their family is no longer with us. It is what those who have spent any time in the professions bear every day. It never goes away, you just keep moving and trying to keep it tucked way back in your memory. There are still triggers that will bring up those memories. My mum was a bereavement counsellor and she used to tell us that she had so many clients who were police officers, doctors, even vets, because they found it so hard to deal with those experiences.

My mum actually died by suicide and I was the one that found her. I had a police officer bang her door open, went upstairs and found her in bed like she was sleeping. It has scarred me for life, but I thank God that I have faith in Christ because without Him I don’t know what I would be like today. But that was just one experience. I can’t imagine what it’s like to go through those things you mentioned as a job and have to live with them in your mind every day.

Just 2 months ago I witnessed a single vehicle car accident. Two guys skidded out and hit a pole. I didn’t even think twice before stopping to try to help. Passenger got right out with no visible injuries but the driver was unconscious and bleeding. He woke up just as I was leaning into the car to see if he was ok and, well, it wasn’t pretty. I just talked to him and reassured him that he’d be okay, not to move, etc. I think the passenger was in shock as he just got on his phone and wandered off to the side of the road. I stayed until the ambulance arrived but I honestly think anyone would do the same if they witnessed an accident and no one else was there to help. I still wonder about that guy and hope he is okay…

So I got out myself to help the lady lying in the middle of the highway. Other off duty nurses arrived, so I went to check out her overturned vehicle for babies (I was pregnant, so babies was the first thing I thought of).❤️

I saw a 21 year old take his last breaths after losing control on a wet highway. I was traveling opposite direction and saw him start to swerve and try to regain control, as I passed him I looked out my window and his truck was off the ground completely, passing me in mid air, upside down. It hit and started rolling for what seemed like 1000 times. I parked, jumped the barrier, and almost tripped over him as I was running because it was just before sun up. He was hurt so bad. There was nothing I could do but beg him to stay with me. An older couple stopped to help, and were already on the phone with 911. As he took his last breaths, I cried. The couple cried. I later found out he was 21, expecting his first child. Still haunts me to this day.

Loss of life is never easy to hear, that was his final justice that day! I was critically injured by a drunk driver on July 11th 1983! I looked like a mummy wrapped up with a TBI and other scars. Today I am physically disabled from a SCI but I never forget then. Don't ride with, associate, or patronize drunk drivers (more on the road today). If you drink and drive, I may snatch your keys, or something else. There is no room for drinking and driving

The more alcohol in your system, the more you bleed. Hence why so many people bled to death when we used to use alcohol as a sort of anesthetic during surgeries.

The reason this happens is because you begin to lose control of your motor functions. It's not huge but its noticeable. So when the drunk drivers get in a crash, they go limp and flop around causing only soft tissue damage, bruising and sprains and such, however, people who are aware of the circumstances (I.e. the sober drivers) tence up because they are anticipating an impact which is what causes the most damage, muscle tears, broken bones, etc.

Lost my cousin in August 1995 to a drunk driver, nearly lost my brother as well but thankfully he survived the incident. They were heading home and got very close to where they were heading but as they came into a turn they were hit by a drunk idiot in a big rig (could've been a bigger pickup truck but it's hard to remember everything to the tee since ive only heard about what happened, i was born 5 years after the incident). My cousin was crushed by the impact and was killed pretty much instantly and my brother was flung out the back windshield. It's been a very long time but Bub your missed daily, I wish I would've had the chance to actually speak with you and get to know you but I won't get that till I'm gone from this world. As far as I remember the driver got nothing more than a slap on the wrist for everything. To everyone who has suffered from drunk driving incidents or lost a loved one to a drunk driver. @@weehoozy4454 i thank you for your comment friend, by all accounts he was a great kid. quiet, humble & soft spoken, always willing to help someone out if he could. He and my brother played music together and had dreams of starting a band although sadly that never got to happen. One of the worst things about this is that the drunk driver who did this never got punished for it and ended up killing someone else as well. Idk if that idiot drunk driver is dead yet or not but i hope he rots in hell whenever he does. Anyways god bless you friend and once again thank you for your comment 🙏

That’s why as much as it sucks, you have to pay attention to the other cars around you as well. If I see behavior like that I always stay far behind them or In front. However, it’s a lot easier to see in Florida with mainly straight roads as opposed to a sharp curve like the one in this video

I too many years ago came apon a similar accident and I was able to save a life but the fact that it was the driver who caused it many people thought I should have let him die, I couldn't. My elementary school principal and her entire immediate family were killed, due to either her drinking or her husband, can't remember who was driving. They, along with their two kids, crashed on a winter night, into a frozen pond and all of them drowned. I remember going to school the following day, not knowing what had happened and it was dead quiet, save for a couple of muffled sobs of students. It was incredibly eerie. That was probably 15 years ago and I'll still never forget how quiet the school was.

October 2nd of 2013 my family was involved in a car accident. We were hit head on by a drunk driver. There was 6 of us. All of us suffered major injuries, my mother suffering life threatening injuries. At the scene, we were told she was dead; which was just a basic assumption due to the fact that her head was split wide open and the paramedics could see gray matter (fluid surrounding the brain) coming from the wound. But she still recovered. She still lives everyday with injuries that will never heal, her brain will never be the same, and the memories of what happened that day will never be forgotten. I pray for everyone that has gone through something like this. And NOBODY deserves to.

I've been sober 15 years because I got pulled over after drinking 2 beers (wasn't drunk) and speeding. Never touched it and then my car again. Never. I get pissed when my husband drives a 1/2 mile to the gas station after hes been drinking. Now hes been sober for about 2 years, so he learned, too. Sadly lessons like these just won't go away until we enforce more stringent traffic laws. Much love!

My son and his cousin, who were about 16 and 17, were in a boat fishing in a lake when they heard a car flying down the road, then a loud crash. They got to the bank, jumped out of the boat, and jumped in the truck. At the end of the road, they saw a car crashed against a tree with smoke pouring out of the engine.

There was a middle-aged woman trapped behind the wheel with thick smoke and flames around her. Her legs were pinned underneath the dash. They broke the back windshield out and they tried to pull her over the back seat. The man who owned the lake came driving up and they all continued to try and get her out. She was conscious and talking to them. By then the smoke was really bad and the flames were higher. She told them all to get out of the car and said, 'I've made my peace with God.' They had no choice as she burned to death. She never screamed or anything. That horror has stayed with them their whole lives and I think of her every now and then. God bless her soul and I'm thankful that my son and nephew tried their best to save her.😢I pray she's in heaven.

A drunk driver killed my pastor, who was my friend and a father figure to me. He hit him while he was riding his motorcycle home from his work. He left him there to die on the side of the road, went home and put his car in the garage and laid low until he was sober. Then, he called the police to see if an accident had been reported at the location. When he found out that my friend had passed, he turned himself in a day later. I miss my friend daily, and he's been gone almost 16 years. There's so much that has happened in my life since that I wish I could've shared with him. Please don't drive if you have been drinking. The damage you may cause never ends.

You never have to be in an accident to have your life changed by a drunk driver. My Mother drove me places while she was drunk. I didn't understand exactly what was going on when I was younger than 16 but I was scared to death. I am so grateful that nothing happened. To this day I am 38 and I don't drink.

For my Mother I am proud of her. She spent the last 13 yrs of her life sober. She worked really hard on herself and became the most wonderful grandmother to my children. There is always hope for the ones that want to break addiction.

Moving a victim can cause more harm than good, best thing to do if you aren't medically certified is to provide the most accurate location and description of the incident to 911, then if safe to do so, put the car in park and turn it off if it is still running.

Sucks man, I’ve been hit head on by a drunk driver when I was 16, I had cracked ribs, cuts from seatbelt, I only had my license a week maybe a little over a week, the drunk driver was the mayor of the towns cousin that I wrecked in and they got him off scene before police showed, nothing happened to him. I passed all my drugs tests, my dad was pissed bc the girl who saw it tried to tell the local police who it was but they wouldn’t listen to her. He wrecked not long after that again this time he was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, and dui. If they would’ve let him learn his lesson then the 12 he killed and his mom would still be here. I’m 31 now, that child would be grown and maybe a career and a family but his life was cut short bc the mayor wanted to keep his drunk cousin out of trouble when he hit a 16 year old girl head on and bc I was ok just “minor injuries” they took him from scene.

I will never forget the story of how my grandmother lost her grandparents in a drunk driving crash in the 60s. She told me how the car folded in on itself and how the rescue teams responded. Everyone was killed in the accident including the drunk driver. Life is short, you never know when it can be taken away. She always tells me this story the closer I get to getting my drivers license, never drink and drive.

I almost started crying at that point thinking that maybe one of the children had passed or the sober driver. I’ve worked a ton of crashes just like this one and it always seemed to me that the drunk driver always seemed to survive because they were so relaxed when they hit. I am so glad to see that everyone in the sober car was as alright as possible. Even though it was heart breaking hearing the screaming and fear. From a medic standpoint, those are sounds of joy to my ears. I have to think about how the intoxicated cars family felt though. Just so sad.

I’m thankful to be alive. I was in an accident with my father a couple years ago. We both weren’t wearing seatbelts bc we were just going home from work for lunch and it was just a few miles down the road. A guy doing whip-its while driving ran a stop sign right in front of me and I slammed on the brakes but there wasn’t enough time to stop. I t-boned him at about 45-50 mph and spun our car in a 180. It was by far the scariest moment of my life. My dads head busted through the passenger side window and knocked him unconscious for about 3 minutes and I thought he was dead. I also thought the guy I t-boned was dead because I hit him right on the drivers side door. Thankfully we all survived. My dad broke his leg and I fractured my ankle. No matter how short the drive I always wear my seatbelt now. Someone was definitely watching over us that day.

In Switzerland, where I live, it is illegal and punishable to NOT wear a seat belt, also in the back seats. As well as to Not wear a helmet, even for a bicycle ride.
No matter how short the distance, always respect safety rules are my leitmotiv.
I once knew a young man who had been scalped. He fell off of his motorcycle only a block away from his house, that's why he didn't wear his helmet. That has been a huge complex for him throughout his life, even though his wasn't a life threatening injury.

One day it clicked that only a shitty person drives drunk when they don’t have to so I started giving up my keys. A few years later I came to the fact that I had a problem and was circling the drain for utter self destruction. Agree 100% and don't just get a kit and not be familiar with it. Bystander syndrome is the worst disease. My father was for 50 years a volunteer fireman, volunteer EMT, and despite having a good full-time government career was an instructor for Region III EMS before the community colleges began offering it and then the city would pay for it if you agreed to volunteer for 24 months. He still taught extrication classes, and my dad was the only person on my block who had a 6-foot long military-style can opener for cutting through body panels. I carry a tourniquet, trauma shears, and a CPR mask everywhere and I have a high-quality trauma kit for emergency first aid in my car. Most people confronted with disaster and trauma will freeze, or they will behave irrationally, and some will rubberneck. I can only claim to have saved one life, although I've administered a lot of first aid, and the guy whom I saved would have died from respiratory depression and having aspirated if I had let his buddies make the decisions which were to panic or try and put him in every thing but the recovery position and get help. I had to scream at people to get them to process and get help [this was 1998, I didn't own a cellphone but there was an officer running radar and a payphone within 500 feet]. I recommend CPR and emergency first aid training because not everyone got to "audit" EMT classes for free in exchange for being strapped to a spine board and carried and having my vitals taken and pretty much everything shy of IVs and intubation. Knowing what to do and being trained to help allows your training to kick in while the primitive part of your brain is freaking out. Having a decent kit to control bleeding and assist breathing and circulation can buy someone's loved one time until more advanced life support arrives.

Tl:dr: First aid, CPR, and the training to actually perform them in an emergency and having the tools on hand can be life or death. If you want video, buy a dashcam, so you can focus on rendering aid.

not sure if anyone will care to read this but here’s my contribution: im 19 years old and have loved motorcycles my whole life, whether it be dirt biles or street bikes. i was 17 riding back from a friends house to go home when a drunk driver hit me in an intersection. i broke both of my arms, ribs, destroyed my knee, and knocked my helmet off resulting in some facial scars. the driver continued to drive with my bike pinned under his car while my body was in the intersection. he drove so long that the bike eventually caught on fire and his truck exploded. i’m fine now, and am loving my first year of college but dont drink and drive yall, its not worth it. cheers👍🏼

I know that was a crazy experience. Im glad you are ok! I once fell out of a car going 45mph down an old highway. I was leaning up against the door on the passenger side, maybe that was a mistake. Almost got hit by a car. Ended up with a broke hip an scraped up a little.

The most screaming you'll hear is from those who don't know self-control. Hysteria and screaming only detract anyone trying to help, and is so unnecessary! Those who are in a lot of pain do NOT scream, they moan, groan, but rarely have the energy to scream. We see it every day in the ER. If they're screaming, we leave them be and take care of the more critical cases. (You cannot medicate a person until you have determined the extent of their injuries, or they could crash on you.) Screaming people are NOT usually STAT cases!

Used to see this stuff all the time as a trucker. Took a dash cam video of one guy so hammered he might as well have been asleep. Hit a guy standing on the side of the road working under his hood. Broke his leg. kept driving until he was forced off the road 1/2 mile later. Who the hell gets staggering drunk and jumps in a car into heavy traffic? People do. Every day.
