Born José Gomes Filho, in Paraíba, Brazil, a region in the northeast of the country, Jackson do Pandeiro's mother, Flora Mourão, was a musician and singer who played several percussion instruments.
As a child he had originally wanted to play the accordion, but his parents could not afford it and bought him a pandeiro, a type of tambourine, in its place. He began playing music with the zabumba, however, in order to assist his mother in performances. When Jackson was 13 years old his family moved to Campina Grande, a city in Paraíba. After the move, Jackson lived in João Pessoa, where he performed in various cabarets and on the radio; and also to Recife, where he eventually began working in a radio station and took the pseudonym of Jackson do Pandeiro. Originally his mother had nicknamed him "Jack", after the actor Jack Perry, who played parts in cowboy films which were popular in Brazil during Jackson's youth. He had his first hit with "Sebastiana", a song based on traditional Brazilian rhythms.
The single was followed by a number of albums that were successful with audiences throughout Brazil. Soon after, he joined his future wife Almira Castilhos de Albuquerque on a trip to Rio de Janeiro, financed by his recent success. The two had been performing in a duo together and were eventually married in October 1954. However, the duo and marriage were jointly ended in 1967, and Jackson's popularity diminished soon after. Jackson did find some greater success later, though, when the popular singer and guitarist Gilberto Gil, as well as the singer Gal Costa, recorded some of his material in 1972.

Veio pro salão, é social
Ele é pernambucano, do canavial
Veio pro salão, é social
Madame na boate fica solfejando
Ao som da champanhota diz: O coco é bom
O musicista toca sem sair do tom
Diz o criminalista: Esse coco mata
É super bizantino, diz o general
Jacinto de Thormes na pena não dorme
E diz o coco é bom, (é social)
E diz o coco é bom, é social
Ele é pernambucano, do canavial
Veio pro salão, é social
Ele é pernambucano, do canavial
Veio pro salão, é social
O diplomata canta baixo na surdina
O financista gosta e faz anotação
Banqueiro financia, pois vale um milhão
Diz a dama de preto: É dança granfina
Jurista de renome, aconselha o povo
O almirante diz: Ele é nacional
Ibrahim Sued, esforço não mede
E diz o coco é bom, (é social)
E diz o coco é bom, é social
Ele é pernambucano, do canavial
Veio pro salão, é social
Ele é pernambucano, do canavial
Veio pro salão, é social
Madame na boate fica solfejando
Ao som da champanhota diz: O coco é bom
O musicista toca sem sair do tom
Toda gente bem, fica admirando
Diz o criminalista: Esse coco mata
É super bizantino, diz o general
Jacinto de Thormes na pena não dorme
E diz o coco é bom, (é social)

The lyrics to Jackson do Pandeiro's song "Coco Social" depict a scene where different social classes come together to enjoy the traditional Brazilian music genre called "coco." The song celebrates the unifying power of music, transcending social boundaries and bringing people from different backgrounds together.
The first verse emphasizes the singer's Pernambucano (from the northeastern state of Pernambuco) origin and his connection to the sugarcane fields. Despite his humble roots, he enters the party scene and is considered "social," indicating his ability to navigate different social circles.
The second verse portrays a variety of characters who are engaged with the music. A wealthy lady at the nightclub hums along and comments that "coco is good" while enjoying her expensive champagne. A musician performs flawlessly and impresses everyone with his skills. The lyrics then humorously mention a criminalist claiming that "coco kills" and a general finding it "super Byzantine," highlighting the diverse opinions and reactions to the music.
In the third verse, a diplomat sings quietly in the background, and a financier takes note of the music's appeal. A banker finances it because it is worth a million, and a lady in black proclaims that it is a dance for high society. A respected jurist advises the people, and an admiral proudly declares that the music is national. Even the famous gossip journalist Ibrahim Sued doesn't hold back in praising the music. Again, this verse illustrates how people from different professions and social positions are drawn to the joy and allure of the coco.
The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces the central message that coco music brings people together. It doesn't matter where one comes from or their social status; coco resonates with everyone. The singer's Pernambucano background serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that coco represents, and its ability to transcend social boundaries is celebrated and cherished in this song.
