I got to meet him right around this time in New York City and let me tell you Jaco had the strongest hand shake I've ever felt from anyone. It was like a vice and I think it's got a lot to do with his sound. Sounds so effortless but there's a lot of strength in his hands. Scary strong!

It took me a while to realize that there is no keyboard/piano on stage! Jaco is so good at laying down the groove whilst taking care of all the harmony, especially during the solos. The whole band is magnificent!

I can honestly say, I have been a pro musician for 25 years.75% on bass. Jaco has not influenced me one single bit. This cat is so above my playing (not to toot my horn but I'm a fairly decent bass player) I love listening to him. I love that 'Come on Come Over" with Sam and Dave and the rest of that album, but nope. He had no influence on my playing just my self esteem.

It is some kind of indian war paint or something. I read that sometimes he would put shoe polish on his face. This video is from around 1982 or so. This is the point he began loosing touch with reality. He was a severe manic depressive/bi-polar and also a severe alcoholic and cocaine addict. He was put in a psychiatric hospital at least once. His playing is still incredible here. About a year after this, record companies almost wouldn't touch him. His behavior became so erratic. In the 70's during his first solo album and most of the time he was in weather report, he wouldn't drink, use drugs or anything. His is really a sad, sad story. I have his biography somewhere, and I re read it about once every year or two. Tragic story.

Love how comments about Jaco veer so carelessly and tactlessly towards his mental illness. Yes, the man had some issues that were sadly untreated and caused the decline of a musical icon. That’s hardly the important thing to enshrine and it’s really sick that everyone has to gawk about the problems he faced. I get that it’s all part of the Jaco mythos, but it’s time for people to get a damn grip and talk about how bloody awesome he is, and leave it at that. When there’s a good reason to talk about his mental health (which it is very important to talk openly about), then let’s do that, but not just talk about it for no reason, because it neither helps advance mental health issues, nor does it show respect to Jaco’s legacy. It just perpetuates the fascination with people’s pain instead of their triumphs.

Jim Sassano Sorry, obviously this rendition is in Bb. But on my CD of the song, it is in G, which is damn easy for a bassist. I tuned to A=440 Hz, so I know it wasn't off. Maybe the recording engineer monkeyed with it, but I doubt it. Still, it is confusing to me why there would be a song played in two different keys on two different versions. Any thoughts?

Jaco held this group together, he was the harmony, bass, percussion, and soloist simultaneously. matykpo1992 Manic depression + cocaine. This is in the middle of some of the most troubling times Jaco had, people were avoiding playing with him, as he'd mess up gigs with random unreliability. One of the Japan gigs he showed up like this, stripped naked and jumped in the harbour....He always had performers tricks, like putting talc on the floor to dance like James Brown, face paint is one way to bring the show up a notch, but he really just isn't thinking very clearly at this point in his life. Playing with his mate Othello Molineaux on steelpan does bring out the best in him though.

had he been around true friends and not people out to exploit him for profit he would b alive today. I was there and nobody tried to help him. of course its difficult to deal w bi polar people many bi polar people r genuis so u gotta take the good w the bad,. i tried to help by babysitting him but didnt have the money or resources. i got him gear which he destroyed and than i didnt like him but didnt see the big picture. Chard haynes and jimmy mosca did him the most harm except for the guy that killed him. Mosca by insisting he drink a beer after jaco tolod him he just got out of rehab and by chard haynes by actually stealing the bass of doom. talk about stealing supermans cape. OBVIOUSLY HE NEEDED THAT BASS more than anyone on the planet. sad

Dave Weiss It's always hard and frustrating to deal with, you did what you could. I hate that moment when you look in someones eyes and see that moment of reflection and "I know man" in the middle of chaos.... Just before they walk away from your help and into danger.

Dave Weiss Fuck them. They killed a genius. I've been crying for him this week. I didn't know him, but he changed my life the night I watched him play bass with Joni Mitchell. I was there to see her, I'd never heard of Jaco before, and he upstaged her. I don't think she minded at all, in fact, she couldn't stop watching him, either. This was when he was still clean and pure and sane, I believe. They both seemed happy, and they sounded amazing. So FUCK anyone that had anything to do with his demise. I do believe in KARMA. RIP Jaco, I loved you!

I played in this band for a while....Jaco was a crazy genius!,....nobody can or has been able to touch his genius...but he was flawed as a human being....you had to be to play so good...so you took your chances...which Jaco was going to turn up for the gig tonight? Othello was awesome....I’m Jamaican so I know a little bit about steel drums...you can only tune it so you get limited chord structure out of the pan.....but Othello always got more,,,he was constantly knocking out the drum with a hammer to get a different sound..and he was so in tune with the music....then you had Peter Erskine...as fine a drummer as you would ever want...he just laid down that beat and away we went...Bobby Mintzer....Bobby Mintzer...what can you say about him.? Beautiful sound and timing...Don Eliase ...great percussionist.....Randy Brecker..beautiful horn play. Truthfully.....jacocould not have kept this group together for any length of time....there were too many world class players here.....but it was good while it lasted....like a shooting star!!!!!

Love the sparseness of this version without the constant chordal support of a keyboard or guitar player. IMO it allows for a more open vibe where you can hear the subtles of what each individual player is doing.

I love the "Chicken". It is probably the only tune I can play solid on bass of allof Jaco's stuff.I love the guy and I hate drugs and alcohol that had a big part in taking this wonderfulmusician out. Love you Jaco.
