Jacob was born in Littlehampton, South Australia on the 29th of March 1982 to parents, Cynthia and Baden. Jacob has two brothers, Brenton and Tegan.
Jacob's love of music can be traced back to his childhood where he grew up surrounded by singing and musical intruments. His parents formed a duo called, "Who Wears The Pants?" performing gigs around Adelaide. Butler could be found in his pajamas watching his parents at their rehearsals or singing with his mum while driving in her car.
When Butler was thirteen he began playing the guitar. At age sixteen, Butler became the drummer for a cover band, Bantha. He was also a member of another cover band called, Single White Male.
After finshing school Jacob started a Commerce degree, which he carried out for three weeks before leaving.
At nineteen, Jacob purchased land for the home, known as 'The B Hive' in the Adelaide Hills. He shared this house with his brother, Brenton for about three years.
In 2004, Jacob traveled overseas to Japan, the UK and Europe.
Butler first auditioned for Australian Idol in 2005. He failed to made it past the Top 100 Group Performances. Butler was a contestant on The X Factor (Australian TV series) in the same year. He made it to sixth place, were he quit before he could get eliminated by the Australian public. Jacob then moved to London. Here he picked up a management deal which he states "went pear".
Butler tried out for Idol again at the 2007 auditions, singing "Don't Look Back In Anger" by Oasis. The Judges were impressed by his improvement in both his songwriting and musicianship. He was soon placed into the Top 24. Australia made him their second top 12 finalist after his rendition of Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars".
Jacob was eliminated on October 8, 2007. His last performance on Idol was on Brit Pop night. He performed The Beatles "Let It Be".

And you can't put our that spark
I know, you've been waiting for this moment
To ignite your life
When you're standing at the station
And you brain's about to storm
And the, eyes of the whole nation
Holding hearts
Come my way, come my way
You should stop the fears that's on your my mind,
Embrace the moments that define us
Come my way,
Yeah you tell me devastation
And you say ... your balls
There's no time for indecision
Listen,
Come my way, come my way
You should stop the fears that's on your my mind,
Embrace the moments that define
Come my way,
Why so afraid?
I will wait for you come my way
Come my way, come my way
You should stop the fears that's on your my mind,
Embrace the moments that define
Come my way, X 2
The lyrics of Jacob Butler's "Come My Way" describe a person who is struggling with anxiety and fear. The singer urges this person to take action, to embrace the moments that have the power to define their life. The person is described as "aching with desire," suggesting that they are yearning for something that they haven't been able to achieve. The singer wants them to ignite the spark and overcome their fears, to come his way.
The second stanza describes the person's state of mind in greater detail. They are standing at a station, possibly ready to embark on a journey or make a decision of some sort. The eyes of the whole nation are on this person, holding their hearts. This line could be interpreted in a number of different ways – perhaps the person is facing a public decision or scrutiny, or they are simply feeling the weight of the expectations of society. Either way, the singer encourages them to come his way, to stop the fears that are holding them back.
Overall, the message of the song is one of encouragement and support. The singer recognizes that the person is struggling, and wants to help them overcome their fears and take action to achieve their desires.
