A Winter's Tale
Jade Warrior Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ivy tapping on my window, wine and candle glow,
Skies that promise snow have gathered overhead.
Buttered toast and creamy coffee, table laid for two,
Lovely having you to share a smile with me.

And it's all right, sitting in firelight
Making the room bright, keeping us warm.
Yes it's so good, smelling that pine-wood
Burning like wood should, glowing like corn.

On the wall the clock is chiming, hours passing by,
And for you and I the wind sings winter songs.
In the village people gather at the Lamplight Inn
Drinking liquid sin to keep the cold away.

And it's all right, sitting in firelight
Making the room bright, keeping us warm.

Yes it's so good, smelling that pine-wood
Burning like wood should, glowing like corn.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jade Warrior's "A Winter's Tale" evoke a feeling of warmth and comfort in a cold winter's night. The imagery of ivy tapping on the window, candlelight, snow in the sky, and buttered toast and coffee on the table create an atmosphere of coziness and intimacy. The lyrics suggest that the singer is enjoying the company of someone special and finds solace in the simple pleasures of life. The mention of the clock chiming and the wind singing winter songs adds a touch of nostalgia to the scene, reminding the listener of the fleeting nature of time and the beauty of the changing seasons.

The chorus of the song repeats the idea that everything is all right, thanks to the warmth and comfort provided by the fire, the pine-wood burning in the hearth, and the shared companionship. The mention of the Lamplight Inn and the people gathering to drink "liquid sin" creates a contrast between the cozy, private space where the singer is spending the evening and the more public space of the village inn, where people are drinking to keep the cold away. This contrast underscores the specialness of the singer's company and the unique comfort they provide each other.

Overall, "A Winter's Tale" is a song about finding joy and comfort in the midst of winter, through the shared experience of warmth, light, and companionship.

Probably the signature tune for this incredible band although their styles and talents vary widely (even within the confines of this one album!) I cannot think of any recording (digital or analog) where a duet of acoustic and electric guitar are so detailed and so beautiful. I would venture that this tune is the younger brother of Lennon's masterpiece, "Norwegian Wood". My only complaint is that it needs another verse rather than the La la, la and no matter now many times I play it, it isn't long enough. A masterpiece.

Been loving it since 75

One of the best "mood" bands ever. JW took you someplace away from the world. Saw them live in '71 with Bull Angus and Styx (don't ask). They tried to get the audience into Barazinbar but the kids were clueless. Didn't have any idea what they were missing. I've worn out two copies of their first album. Fantastic group. RIP, Tony.

I remember this from the early post HS days. They played this on the FM station, (back when rain wasn't all corporate) This was very atmospheric. Some old hippie stuff....Thanks for posting this
