Freedom
Jade de LaFleur Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Handcuffs on me, call it freedom.
Rain I'm drowning, I'm still breathing.
My wings are clipped now, still high can't come down.
Eyes locked on me, you can't see this.
Razor blade, my heart is bleeding.
But then again, It feels like freedom.
It tastes so sweet on my lips
If this ain't freedom.
Then babe I don't know what is.
Pain or pleasure, what you're needing.
Fantasy or real, am I dreaming?
When your world is upside down
You don't fall, you fly down.
Eyes locked on me, you can't see this.
Razor blade, my heart is bleeding.
But then again, It feels like freedom.
It tastes so sweet on my lips

If this ain't freedom.
Then babe I don't know what is.

Overall Meaning

Jade de LaFleur's song "Freedom" is a poetic exploration of the complexity of freedom. The opening line "Handcuffs on me, call it freedom" juxtaposes the idea of being tied up with the concept of freedom. This suggests that freedom can be paradoxical in that it can come at a cost. Just because someone is not bound physically, does not mean they are truly free. This is further emphasized in the line "Rain I'm drowning, I'm still breathing" which could be interpreted as being trapped in a situation (rain) that is suffocating but still being alive.

The next verse "My wings are clipped now, still high can't come down" highlights the idea that even when you feel restricted, there can still be a sense of euphoria. The following lines "Eyes locked on me, you can't see this" and "Razor blade, my heart is bleeding" could be interpreted as feeling like your pain and suffering is not being recognized by others, but it can still feel like freedom. The chorus "But then again, It feels like freedom. It tastes so sweet on my lips. If this ain't freedom. Then babe I don't know what is" brings all these ideas together. It suggests that freedom is not always straightforward and can often come at a cost, but it can still be sweet and worth experiencing.

In the bridge, "Pain or pleasure, what you're needing. Fantasy or real, am I dreaming?" further explores the idea that freedom can be both pleasurable and painful. The final lines "When your world is upside down. You don't fall, you fly down" could be interpreted as saying that freedom can come from embracing chaos and uncertainty.
