Emergency
Jae Stephens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Does it slip into your bloodstream?
Tried to kick it with some codeine, I swear
Have you sweatin' like a bad dream
Does it ever leave you gasping for air?

Runnin', runnin' out, runnin' low
Got me runnin' right around, rodeo, yippee-ki-yay
It's alright, babe, I know
I know, I know you know, I know you know

I think I need
Your heat on me
90 degrees
Emergency
I need your heat
Emergency

I could go out and clear my mind
But I doubt I would ever find the thing
To send chills runnin' down my spine
Like when you do the thing I like, I really am

Runnin', runnin' out, runnin' low
Got me runnin' right around, rodeo, yippee-ki-yay
It's alright, babe, I know
I know, I know you know, I know you know

I think I need
Your heat on me
90 degrees
Emergency
I need your heat
Emergency

Tell me that it doesn't get to you
The way that it gets to me
When I can't have you in my arms
Yeah, yeah
Tell me that it doesn't affect you
The way that it affects me
When I just can't get what I want
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I think I need
Your heat on me
90 degrees
Emergency

I need your heat
Emergency

Overall Meaning

In "Emergency," singer Jae Stephens describes the overwhelming desire and addiction to a person's heat and touch. She compares it to a drug that she can't get enough of, admitting that she has even tried to substitute it with codeine but nothing compares to the high she gets from her lover’s warmth. Stephens’ describes how being deprived of her lover’s touch can feel like suffocation, making her run out of breath and sweat profusely. It's almost as if their presence is the only thing that can regulate her body temperature and put her at ease.

Despite still craving for it when they’re not around, she assures them that she will be okay until they meet again. The chorus of the song emphasizes her dependence on their love - she needs an emergency dose of their heat when she’s low or out of it. She admits that finding someone who can replace their touch would be impossible and that trying to move on by clearing her mind and finding distractions would never work.
