Gun
Jagger Mick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your friends will say
It's self defense
With no hope of recompense
And anyway it makes no sense
The way you hurt me baby

You always turn the other cheek
Always acted mild and meek
Ya always played me for a geek
The way you dressed to kill

Why don't just get a gun and shoot it
Why don't you just get a gun
Why don't you just get a gun
And shoot it through this heart of mine
Through this heart of mine

You tried to stretch me on the rack
I saw you laughing when I cracked
You broke my will you broke my back
On the wheel of uncertainty

You tried to push me to the edge
You wouldn't listen when I begged
Why don't you push me off the ledge
It's just torture baby

Why don't just get a gun and shoot it
Why don't you just get a gun
Why don't you just get a gun
And shoot it through this heart of mine
Through this heart of mine
Through this heart of mine
Through this heart of mine

Why don't you just buy a gun
Why don't you just buy a gun and shoot it
Why don't you just buy a gun

Your friends will say it's self defense
They say it's cheap and no expense

Why don't you just get a gun and use it
Why don't you just get a gun
Gun [cont]

Why don't you just get a gun
And shoot it through this heart of mine

Through this heart of mine
Through this heart of mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mick Jagger's song "Gun" are about a toxic and abusive relationship in which one person, likely the singer, is being emotionally and/or physically tormented by their partner. The song is written from the perspective of the abused person, who is contemplating getting a gun to defend themselves against their abuser. The singer describes the ways in which they have been mistreated and pushed to the brink of desperation, with no hope of recompense or justice for the harm that has been done to them. At the same time, they express feelings of rage and resentment towards their abuser, who has caused them immeasurable pain and suffering.

The lyrics are dense and metaphorical, but the underlying message is clear - the singer is in a deeply unhealthy and dangerous situation, and is considering taking extreme measures to protect themselves. By suggesting that their partner "just get a gun" and shoot them through the heart, the singer is expressing their desire for the pain and torment to end, even if that means resorting to violence. The song underscores the destructive power of abusive relationships, and the toll that they can take on a person's mental and emotional wellbeing.

I;m not even that sure if it's a good song or not; it probably sucks. But I think it is great the way Jagger is always moving. Of course you fall on your face every now and then. E.g. I have never understood why he feels the need to put these Irish jigs on his albums, that are just ludicrous. In this song, the best feature is that snare. I have used this snare to make a point, or as an example of a sound several times in the studio. The small cutting sound, and then the way it fades in after the verse has started, and adds that galloping pick up.

Townshend plays guitar on this one.
