He was born in Nottingham to musical parents who separated when he was young. His father, David Bugg, was a nurse and his mother worked in sales, both parents having previously made recordings. He grew up in the Clifton council estate of Nottingham and started playing guitar at the age of 12 after being introduced to the instrument by his uncle Mark. He attended Farnborough School Technology College in Clifton. He has described a formative musical moment when, aged 12, he heard Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" on an episode of The Simpsons. He was enrolled in a music technology course but, by the age of 16, he had dropped out and was writing and performing his own songs.
Note To Self
Jake Bugg Lyrics

Just how special you really are
And I try to remind you
Sometimes I can't find you
But the truth is in your heart
So write a note to yourself
Your best is good enough
So pick the pen up
So write a note to yourself,
A note to yourself
And don't be cruel,
'Cause things do happen
And you know it's not your fault
Don't cover your wounds with the salt
Girl, let me tell you what I see
You've got to believe me
You're a thing of beauty
Girl, put it in an envelope
Put it in the post
It'll come back to your door
So write a note to yourself,
A note to yourself
And don't be cruel,
'Cause things do happen
And you know it's not your fault
Don't cover your wounds with the salt
And write a note to yourself
And read the note to yourself
The song "Note to Self" by Jake Bugg is an encouraging and uplifting message to oneself. The lyrics talk about forgetting how special one really is, and sometimes even the people around searching for a way to remind them of their true worth. The song emphasizes the importance of self-love and acceptance, reminding the listener not to beat themselves up for not being perfect and to be kind to themselves. The lines “don't cover your wounds with salt” and “your best is good enough” show that even with flaws, one is still deserving of love and acceptance.
The chorus of the song, which repeats the phrase “write a note to yourself,” serves as a call to action for the listener. The idea is to physically write a message to oneself, reminding them of how important and special they are. By doing so, it can serve as a reminder for when things get tough and a little bit of encouragement is needed. The last lines of the song, “and read the note to yourself,” serve as a reminder that the message is for oneself and to take it to heart.
Overall, "Note to Self" carries a positive message that is essential to anyone’s mental health, especially in today's world, where people can be hard on themselves. It is a reminder to embrace oneself for who they are and to be kind to oneself. Through this song, Jake Bugg encourages everyone to write their own note to themselves and to read it during times of insecurity and self-doubt.

Girl, you've been forgetting
You have been forgetting something important
Just how special you really are
How unique and valued you truly are
And I try to remind you
I make an effort to jog your memory
Sometimes I can't find you
Occasionally I cannot reach you emotionally
But the truth is in your heart
However, the truth lies within you
So write a note to yourself
Take a pen and document your feelings
Girl, don't beat yourself up
Do not be too hard on yourself
Your best is good enough
You shouldn't compare yourself with others
So pick the pen up
Take a pen and write whatever you want
And don't be cruel,
Don't be abusive towards yourself
'Cause things do happen
Because things sometimes don't go as planned
And you know it's not your fault
And you realize it's not your fault entirely
Don't cover your wounds with the salt
Do not exacerbate your pain with negative thoughts
Girl, let me tell you what I see
Allow me to share my perception with you
You've got to believe me
It's important that you trust me
You're a thing of beauty
You are a beautiful person
Girl, put it in an envelope
Put your note in an envelope
Put it in the post
Send it through the mail
It'll come back to your door
And it will eventually return to you
And read the note to yourself
Finally, read your note to yourself
