He was born in Nottingham to musical parents who separated when he was young. His father, David Bugg, was a nurse and his mother worked in sales, both parents having previously made recordings. He grew up in the Clifton council estate of Nottingham and started playing guitar at the age of 12 after being introduced to the instrument by his uncle Mark. He attended Farnborough School Technology College in Clifton. He has described a formative musical moment when, aged 12, he heard Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" on an episode of The Simpsons. He was enrolled in a music technology course but, by the age of 16, he had dropped out and was writing and performing his own songs.
Someone Told Me

Someone told me I'm out my mind oh
Someone told me a girl I like
Fell in love and all I did was cry oh
Someone hold me I am done with this game
Said I'm sorry but I'm not to blame
What a shame oh
Tried to break from this lonely pain
Someone told me I'm just insane oh
Broke my heart when I knew
That I could never be with you oh
Someone loved me but not today
Will you show me, show me a way
How to love oh
Someone told me a girl I like
Fell in love and all I did was cry oh
The lyrics of Jake Bugg's song "Someone Told Me" tells the story of a person who is in love with someone who doesn't reciprocate the same feelings. The singer is questioning his own sanity as someone has told him that he is crazy or blind for falling in love. The first verse suggests that he is feeling insecure about his position in a relationship, and he is hurt and jealous that someone else he likes has fallen in love with someone else. He is crying and asking for someone to hold him.
The second verse continues with the themes of loneliness and rejection. The person desperately wants to escape the pain of rejection and loneliness, but feels that he is going insane. He is brokenhearted knowing that he will never be able to be with the person he loves. He pleads for someone to teach him how to love.
The repetition of the line "someone told me" emphasizes the constant bombardment of opinions and rumors that are causing the singer's emotional turmoil. He is struggling to come to terms with the reality of his situation, and is seeking support and guidance from those around him.
In summary, the song is about unrequited love, loneliness, and the emotional toll that it takes on an individual. The singer is struggling to accept the reality of his situation and is seeking support from others to help him cope with his emotions.
