Artist
Jake Coco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could paint you red, like the passion you feel
It might not be colorful, but at least it'd be real

And I could paint you green, like the envy you know, when you're all alone at night
With nowhere to go

And I could paint you grey, to show how you're empty
To show how you don't care
So the world can all see

And I could paint you clear
I'd make you graceful
I'd make you beautiful
'Cause that's what you are

And I could paint you taupe
Because they say that it's soothing
But you're like a drug to me
That could use some abusing

And I could paint you gold
To show you're immortal
Would that make you honest?
Would it make you sincere?

Scarlet and Clover, all the things we talked about
Violet and Green and the world in between
The grey skies in your blue eyes, broken hearts are all that you know

I could be clear
Yeah you could see through me
And I could be beautiful
Just to be yours
Just to be...

I could paint you clear,
I'd make you graceful
I'd make you beautiful
Cause that's what you are

And I could be clear, and I could be graceful
I swear I'd be colorful just to be yours

If I were an artist, then I could be yours

Overall Meaning

The song "Artist" by Jake Coco portrays the artist's desire to paint various emotions and feelings of the person he loves through the colors on his canvas. The artist expresses his ability to paint different colors to convey different feelings that the person he loves goes through. The song begins with the artist explaining how he can paint his lover red, to show the passion he feels, not the colorful ones but the real passion. In the same way, he can paint her green, the color of envy, depicting how she feels when she is all alone at night.

Moving forward, the artist explains how he can paint her gray to show her emptiness and her indifference to the world. He can also paint her clear, making her graceful and beautiful because that is what she is. He can even paint her taupe, a soothing color, but since she is like a drug to him, she deserves some abusing. Finally, the artist can also paint her gold to show that she is immortal, but the question that arises is, would that make her honest? Or would it make her sincere?

The chorus of the song takes a different turn than the verses. The artist begins to explain his stance, saying that he also wants to be beautiful and clear just to be hers. The song concludes by saying that if he were an artist, he could be hers.

Overall, the song is about the deep love the artist feels towards his lover and how he wishes to express it on his canvas. He wants to paint his lover's emotions and feelings, even the ones that are not so bright, because she deserves to be seen and understood in all her realness.

Love this song but there is an amazing version of this song i can't find. Has piano in it after first chorus. Starts immediately strong and doesn't break words till i can paint you grey. Anyways watched pretty much every video on here and that version dont exist anymore. There use to be a video of it up with lyrics and cool colors. Can't find it. :(
