Set me free !
Flash backs hits me right between the eyes

The man just came and said to me: I want you by my side.
Something so excited but not without a doubt
He's locked the door and thrown the key
Someone get me out.

I know he means no harm to me
But building walls confining me
Can only make me want to leave - set me free !

Set me free
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free

Set me free
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free!

Falling crashing in and out of love
Doing things that girls do
Then he came about.
So delightful all that I could want

But he locked the door and threw the key
Won't you let me out?
I know he means no hann to me
But building walls csnfining me...

Set me free
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free...

Let me go! I said let me go! Set me free!

I know he means no harm to me
But building walls confining me...

Let me go ! I said let me go ! Set me free !
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free...

Set me free
Set me free
Set me free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Set Me Free" by Jaki Graham talk about feeling trapped in a relationship where the person is building walls and confining the singer. The singer expresses their desire to be set free from the relationship. The song begins with the singer experiencing flashbacks and being approached by their partner who wants them to stay by their side. Though the singer is excited, they are unsure about their partner's intentions. Soon after, the partner locks the door and throws away the key, leaving the singer feeling trapped.

The singer continues to confide in the listener that they know their partner means no harm, but feels that the building walls are confining them. The phrase "set me free" is repeated throughout the song as the singer urges their partner to let them go. The chorus is a plea to be released from the confines of the relationship.

The song portrays the feelings of many who feel trapped in a relationship but might not have the courage to voice out their feelings. It highlights the importance of freedom and being able to make personal choices, even if that means ending a relationship. The songwriter, Jaki Graham, delivers these lines with a sense of urgency, emphasizing the weight of the singer's plea for freedom.

Best voice to come out of Britain in pop music back in the 80's and since. Criminally underrated. Love her high octane infused music compared to the crap that passes as music today.
If she was in America, she'd be a major star. Britain was not ready for a sublime R'nB blackstar voice like this back in the 80's. Shame.

Ralph Jackson

She had a string of hits here in the UK in 1985 and 1986. This was one of them, peaking at number 7 in June 1986.

Joel Newnham

That's true actually, didn't help that she was British. Ruby Turner had similar difficulties.

MampsUK

She was definitely underrated this tune is amongst one of my favs of the 80s

AW

Absolutely. Loose Ends were another British soul act that never got the mega stardom they deserved
