So Long Marianne
James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I'm standing on a ledge
And you fine spider's web
Is fastening my ankle to the bone

So long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and
Laugh about it all again

We met when we were almost young
You made me forget so very much
I forgot to pray for the angels
And then the angels forgot to pray for us
So long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and
Laugh about it all again

For now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
But I never said that I was brave

So long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and
Laugh about it all again about it all again
So long, Marianne so long, Marianne
Marianne! Marianne!

Now you're really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed
This whole mountainside
I see you in the distance, on the plains

So long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and
Laugh about it all again about it all again
About it all again so long, Marianne
So long, Marianne all the fights
With that big kitchen knife all the lies
And the hate that you spat
All those long, long, furious nights
All those long, long, furious nights
All the tears that we shed
The excitement we had and the unmade bed
With that big kitchen knife
And the crimes we committed at night
Yeah, the crimes we committed at night
For a love we could never get right
For a love we could never get right

So long, Marianne! So long, Marianne!
Marianne!

Overall Meaning

The song So Long Jimmy by James Blunt is a tribute to a musician named Jimmy who appears to have had a significant impact on the singer's life. The lyrics talk about a moment spent with Jimmy on the sofa, listening to a song that no one else knows. There is a sense of admiration and wonder for Jimmy's talent and creativity as the singer questions whether Jimmy wrote the song himself or if some kind of voodoo magic was involved in its creation.

As the song continues, the singer reflects on the experience of being around Jimmy and the effect he had on those in his presence. The line "Are you just cool and I'm just baked?" suggests a feeling of inferiority, as though the singer doesn't feel he can measure up to Jimmy's charisma and talent. However, despite any insecurity, the singer still acknowledges Jimmy's impact on his life and on the lives of others. The repeated refrain of "So long Jimmy, so long" feels like a bid farewell to someone who has left a lasting impression on the singer and the people around him.

Overall, the lyrics of So Long Jimmy are a reflection on the power of music and the impact that someone with true talent and creativity can have on those around them. It's a bittersweet tribute to someone who has left a mark on the singer's life but has now moved on, leaving a sense of longing and admiration behind.

I have no idea where that last verse came from but James really makes it part of the song with authority. It kind of sounds spontaneous, but nonetheless, I love it! Also Tim Booth changed the fourth line of the verse that starts with "oh now, you're really such a . . . . ." by adding "I see you in the distance on the plain." It fits well and is a joy to listen to. Great cover of the song and not a copy of what was previously recorded by the masterful Cohen.

It’s a brilliant riff on Laid.

He gives a name to the unnamed woman from Leonard Cohens classic.

Szabolcs Mezei

that's an improvisational part Tim used to add live

Bump! And a worthy one. "Im your Fan is one of the best albums ever. This version esp the breakdown I used to rewind on my walkman over and over. "With that big kitchen knife all those long long furious night those long long furious nights" him just growling it out. Someone find these fellows and buy them a drink.
