Jesus taught, "If ye abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you." Jesus was all about, "Ask and ye shall receive." It's interesting that He never once taught that asking God for something was wrong because you wanted it for yourself. In fact, he once said, "Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."

Paul told the Philippians, "Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God." (Php 4:6)

In other words, don't filter your prayers to God. Tell Him what you want.

James tells us that asking for what we want is somehow evil. I am of the opinion that if all I can ask for is what God wants then I can kinda let God do all the asking for me. I mean, am I trying to put on a show of piety for God? Who benefits from that? There is playing church and there is keepin' it real, IMHO.

Thank God James' religion is not the gospel and James is smart enough to never call his brand of religion, "good news" (gospel). That word is never used in the Book of James.

James calls the Law of Moses, "The Royal Law" and "The perfect Law of Liberty". Peter and Paul called it "bondage".

Acts 15:10 - Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

Gal. 2:4 - And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

The apostles of Jesus Christ understood that the Law was NOT liberty but an undoable yoke of bondage. But that doctrine flies in the face of the Jewish religious establishment and is what they persecuted and killed Christians for. It's what they used to imprison Paul with in the latter chapters of Acts.

"Love your neighbor as yourself" is part of the Law of Moses.

Lev. 19:18 - Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

Nobody can save you from that brand of religion. You will die in your sins unless you repent of that mindset. Take it at face value and ask yourself, "Am I always doing my best for God?" Right now, you're reading what some monkey is writing on the Internet, is that the best use of your time for God? Certainly not.

If you're at church and worshiping God, could you have brought someone with you? Did you talk to enough people about Jesus this week? If you helped someone move, did you also talk about Jesus to them the whole time? If not, why not? If you are not going flat out for God 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you're sinning.

In the words of Admiral Akbar, "It's a TRAP!" James 4:17 is poison especially to the most God fearing persons. The Book of James is loaded with doctrine and a lot of it is very BAD doctrine.

You think that if you insert some extra words to the text that you can magically transform unbelief into belief? Well, if that's fair play then anybody can insert anything to any of the text of the bible and come up with a doctrine that suits himself. If not, why not?

It is NOT s superior translation to insert your own brand of religion. "Can that kind of faith save him?" That's not what is written. What are we warned about going beyond what is written? "Whosoever transgresseth (i.e. goes beyond) and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ HATH NOT GOD." (2 John 9a) What did Paul tell Timothy?

1 Tim. 4:16a (NIV) - Watch your life and doctrine closely.

Taking James' DOCTRINE at face value, then, what is he saying? That faith only cannot save - cannot justify.

Romans 4:4-5 - Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

James erected as straw man. Paul was NOT teaching that all you do is have mental ascent to the existence of God but that's what James wants us to believe that that is what Paul was teaching. But if you read Romans 4, Paul is not talking about believing in the existence of God but believing what that God has promised.

Rom 4:20-21 - He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Believing in the promises of God is airtight. You can fake piety (to yourself and others). You can fake good works. But you cannot fake belief in God's promises. I tested this doctrine and so I know. Faith righteousness is the perfect filter. It is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. It can smoke out a pretender faster than anything I have ever seen.

The doctrine that God does not tempt us with evil ignores pretty much all of scripture. The Book of James is LOADED with doctrine - sometimes false doctrine. Let's go to the bible. In Genesis, what did God put in that Garden? Did Satan put that there or did God? You can see this happen over and over again throughout the scriptures. And so, to say that God doesn't tempt us is empirically false. You can learn a lot just by reading the text.

James tells us that lust leads to sin.

James 1:14-15 - But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Jesus taught that lust IS sin. Paul reminds us that the Law calls lust a sin.

Rom. 7:7 - What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Paul and Jesus seemed to understand the Law and lust but James is a little out of phase with that teaching. The Book of James is indeed a doctrinal book and sometimes a false doctrinal book. Read the text and learn.

Thank you for sharing such meaningful and informative lessons. I definitely relate to lessons learned in this series. I believe COVID created an increasing need and desire for spiritual guidance and understanding. Listening to your lessons has helped me immensely to understand the Bible. Physical presence at my very small church will not be possible until perhaps January. I will continue with Calvary teachings/sermons however. I understand real faith and works do much better. God has certainly used you to "bring me closer" and I thank Him and you from northern MN where no comparable to this is available to me

Praying for the sick (it seems to me) is to pray for their healing. I cannot think of a single instruction or example of anyone praying that a sick person just "live with it". Even James asks, "Is anyone sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church, who will anoint him with oil and pray for him." He goes on to say that if the sick person has sinned then God will heal him. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." It seems like a prayer for the sick should be a prayer for his healing.

Do you have B/C/V for a prayer to God for someone to just learn to live in patience with his sickness? I can't think of one.

Jesus said that disease was "bondage of the devil" (see Luke 13:16). Should we just learn to grin and bear our bondage to Satan?

I'm not sure what you mean by "a doctrinal book". The Book of James is LOADED with doctrine (teaching). Just off the top of my head, he teaches that pure religion is to visit the fatherless and widows and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. That's a teaching. He teaches that the doctrine of justification by faith only is bunk. That's kind of "counter doctrinal". Doctrine means teaching and if a teacher (rabbi) is not teaching then he's wasting everybody's time

Sanctified means "holy" or "set aside for a holy purpose". A "saint" is someone who is sanctified. A person has "fruit unto holiness" but that's something that happens as a result of his sanctification - not some process he's trying to work himself through. Jesus talked about abiding in the Vine in order to bear much fruit. It's a very similar concept. The New Testament teaches things like, "God giveth the increase". It's not to him that runneth nor to him that willeth but God, who has mercy. Trying to force your brand of holiness (sanctification) on your life is an exercise in futility. We walk in the Spirit and not strain and struggle and strive. That's the Old System of religion. Jesus promises us abundant life that comes as a result of abiding in Him. He promises that His yoke is easy and his burden is light. We can make things difficult for ourselves trying to force it but hopefully we learn from that mistake before we burn out and walk away from God in frustration... like I did, once upon a time.

James 2:8 The ROYAL LAW should be written with initial caps, if not all caps! It’s the “new commandment” that Jesus gave us, in John 13:34, which sums up the Ten Commandments into one, physically giving food to the fatherless and widows especially. PURE religion (James 1:27) tells US to give those starving food and necessities. Same for PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY, James 2:8. God showed me that the cause of world poverty is the oppressive system we still have is the wage system, just like in Exodus. Notice how the theme of the Bible keeps referring back to the way God “lead the people out of Egypt” referred to over 600 times! So God doesn’t like the wage system in Egypt or now because it’s oppression, a heavy burden (IDOLS: debt, rent, insurance and everything), like insurance most people worldwide can’t get because there aren’t ANY JOBS, and because it shouldn’t exist, and only exists because of the USA wage system, especially how USA forces all nations to accept it (“Rogue State” by Wm Blum) by starting over 50 wars worldwide to “stop communism”, teaching torture, and more, including how making too many weapons because it “creates millions of WAGE JOBS”, making USA look “good” but it’s evil oppression. We should force all weapons manufacturers and military out of existence because that’s “an evil way,” not God’s PERFECT WAY, meaning a new system that doesn’t cause harm and does NOT cause world poverty! If USA alone today eliminated all harmful jobs there wouldn’t be many wage jobs. So if not the wage system, then we’d be able to give a UBI (Universal Basic Income), or equal wealth (stop giving all money to a few rich people, leaving billions to starve), then all nations could end world poverty. We can do it today, for the first time in history, because most money is just numbers in computers! It won’t happen easily, but it’s possible finally! If Christians started demanding a UBI and or equal wealth to end oppression and world poverty WE could be the ones God has been waiting for, and WE could end world poverty and crimes and wars! Ending wage slavery (like Exodus) will save the Earth too (ex: stop cutting down all trees to save forest... and mankind), and all nations could finally “destroy death” (the “last enemy” see I Cor 15:26 we must destroy) and save lives by building only TOWER CITIES connected to MAGLEV TRAINS WORLDWIDE! Cars killed millions so WE must eliminate all vehicles ASAP to save the Earth! That is God’s PURPOSE so it should be OUR PURPOSE, to end all oppression. ( see Purpose in Isaiah 14:24-27) Study oppression. God bless everyone.

If you believe that real, active, dynamic faith is necessary (and it is) then why would you counter the doctrine of justification by faith, which James does?

Paul preached an real, active, dynamic faith but he also acknowledged the truth - that God justified Abraham on the strength of his faith in God's promise. James poo-poos it.

@Mn M For fifteen years I have been hypothesizing that James is a pre Crucifixion epistle. The 'counter points' that I have been receiving are nowhere near convincing. I have heard every idea that can he heard regarding the incorrectness of the pre Crucifixion authorship and nothing has laid a glove on it. . Consequently the hypothesis is irrefutable.

@Mn M It is irrefutable that there is no mention of any of the consequences of the Resurrection. There is no idea of Sonship, Imputation, Grace, the Blood, or even the Empty Tomb. It is irrefutable that parousia was a pre Crucifixion word so it's inclusion in a pre Crucifixion epistle is not indicative of it's date of authorship. It is irrefutable that there are no references let alone specific references to the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The only Scriptural way that can happen is that they hadn't happened yet. By the way, the angst is not new to me either. I get the ramification of stating that the Church has had it wrong for 2000 years, but better late than never.

@Richard McLaughlin I have no angst about changing position, I just don't see the absence of comment as evidence.
It seems to me entirely reasonable that James' relatively short letter doesn't talk about the resurrection as it's not the message. It's a practical letter about how to be more mature. That seems like a very reasonable alternative (and even if you don't think it's the most likely I don't see how it's refuted).
I also think that it's more likely that James was written after the death of Jesus as what would be the point of writing a letter with one's (divinely inspired) advice when Jesus is present? Surely it would make sense to just quote Jesus, if a letter's even necessary.
It would just be such an odd choice that I think transcribing the choice not to mention the cross as a theming choice for a short letter makes more sense.

James is just wrong but you're right, he's flipping the coin. Check it out: James wrote, "Faith without works is dead", but I say unto you that Works without faith are impossible.

Example: If you do not believe that the laying on of hands will heal someone, will you lay your hands on a sick person in the name of Jesus? If you don't believe that prayers for the sick will do them any good, will you pray for the sick?

And so you see, works without faith will not even be tried - let alone accomplished. Works without faith are impossible. James is just a hair out of phase.
