James Blake began his final year at Goldsmiths in September 2009 studying popular music while recording songs in his bedroom. In July 2009, he attended the Latymer School and released his debut single "Air and Lack Thereof" on Hemlock Audio. It was a firm favorite with Gilles Peterson from BBC Radio 1, and Blake was invited to do a special mix on Peterson's worldwide show, which included an exclusive Mount Kimbie track.
Blake released his debut EP The Bells Sketch on 8 March 2010 on Hessle Audio, followed soon after by CMYK on 31 May 2010 and Klavierwerke on 10 October 2010, both on R&S Records. All three EPs were met with significant critical acclaim: BBC's Nick Grimshaw chose CMYK as his Record of the Week, the title track of CMYK was ranked 24th on Frontier Psychiatrist's top 40 songs of the year, and all three of Blake's 2010 EPs were collectively ranked 8th on Pitchfork's top 50 albums of 2010.
On 4 February 2011, Blake released his self-titled debut LP, James Blake, via ATLAS and A&M. Three singles were released for the album: "Limit to Your Love," "The Wilhelm Scream," and "Lindisfarne"/"Unluck". The album was very well-received by critics: on 29 September 2010, BBC's Zane Lowe made "Limit To Your Love" his "Hottest Record in the World," Pitchfork awarded the album Best New Music and ranked it the 12th best album of 2011 on their year-end list, and it was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize.
On 7 October 2011, Blake released his fourth EP, Enough Thunder, via ATLAS and A&M. Two singles were released for the EP: "Fall Creek Boys Choir," a collaboration between Blake and Bon Iver, and "A Case of You," a cover of Joni Mitchell. On 12 December 2011, Blake released another EP through R&S, Love What Happened Here.

By yourself, by yourself, by yourself
We on a drive, looped in
Two seat ride, couped in
Who gon' slide? Who's in?
Big rocks 'round of ten
Fleetwood down new sand
Don't leave 'round loose ends
Don't be around new friends, yeah
We just be mile high clubbin'
I'm on a thousand miles runnin'
Hit it, go downtown Sunday
Then move it uptown Monday
Don't wanna see you by yourself, by yourself
By yourself, by yourself, by yourself
If I give it to you, will you leave?
Tell it to you, will you speak?
Got it tatted on my sleeve
Fell in love oversea
Ass fatter than a peach, uh
Ocean water kinda deep, uh
Rolling up out the reef, uh
Put me down, shake the sleep
Lasting like Duracell
Lasting like Duracell
Forty days, forty nights
Feel like a holy night
The lesson's always there
That less is always more
And in the back and forth
I'm not keeping score
Lesson's always there
That less is always more
When you're alone with me
You never come up short
You never come up short
Never come up short
Never come up short
Never come-
Watch the fan as it spins
In my arms, wrapped in
Don't know where you start
And where I begin
Like I found myself an imaginary friend
And when we stay in
I'm missin' everything
We just be mile high clubbin'
I'm on a thousand miles runnin'
Hit it, go downtown Sunday
Then move it uptown Monday
Don't wanna see you by yourself, by yourself
By yourself, by yourself, by yourself
Hi-Vis, never seem
Lowkey as it's been
Fell in love overseas
Fell in love like it's easy
Put to sleep without dreams
Under the moonbeam
Call you for no reason
Hold on like it's greasy
Lasting like Duracell
Lasting like Duracell
Forty days, forty nights
Feel like a holy night
The lesson's always there
That less is always more
And in the back and forth
I'm not keeping score
Lesson's always there
That less is always more
When you're alone with me
You never come up short
You never come up short
Never come up short
Never come up short
Never come-
See you by yourself, by yourself
By yourself, by yourself, by yourself
"Mile High" by James Blake featuring Travis Scott and Metro Boomin is a song about a relationship that is firmly grounded in the need for constant companionship. The chorus, "Don't wanna see you by yourself, by yourself/ By yourself, by yourself, by yourself," conveys the idea that the singer cannot stand the thought of their partner being alone, and they want to be with them all the time. The lyrics also describe the couple going on a road trip, with the repeated line "We on a drive, looped in/Two seat ride, couped in/Who gon' slide? Who's in?" suggesting that they are on this journey together, and no one else can come between them.
The song also speaks to the pleasures of the "mile high club" and the excitement of spontaneous and passionate sexual encounters. The lines "We just be mile high clubbin'/I'm on a thousand miles runnin'" paint a picture of two people who are enjoying the thrill of being together and exploring their desires. Yet, the song is not just about physical intimacy but also emotional intimacy. The verse "Watch the fan as it spins/In my arms, wrapped in/Don't know where you start/And where I begin/Like I found myself an imaginary friend" speaks to the idea that the singer views their partner as someone who is intimately connected to them, so much so that they are like an imaginary friend.
Overall, "Mile High" is a song about a relationship that is intense and all-consuming. The couple wants to be together all the time and is not content with being separated. The song celebrates the pleasures of physical intimacy and the joy of being with someone who is a true partner.
