To me this song means outgrowing the choices you’ve made but dedicated a lot of your life to and then slowly losing your identity in relation to that, and so in turn losing your connection to everything around you. To me it represents the dark night of the soul which is painful yet transformative and indicating a massive shift and change just like the apocalypse in the video where everything must begin anew. “is this darkness or the dawn?”
Intense isolation and hiding away… and figuring out if not here, then where do you really belong.

Here in March 25, 2024. How is this song 11 years old???! I swear it feels and sounds like I heard it on local indie radio maybe a year or few ago. It's funny how a lot of people are interpreting the song by the video, saying it's about the world coming to an end, the apocalypse.

Imagine feeling so alone, so unwanted, it felt like an apocalypse in your head. Your friends are gone, and it feels like you're dying because they don't want you anymore. You're nothing to them. You only want to be the person you once saw in yourself, but it was only a sliver of a reflection of who you really are.

You feel like you'll always be alone, because the world you know is one you've grown in your version of a pained reality.

This song is closely tied to my existential crisis as well. It's really a haunting feeling once you realize you're stuck in a world you have grown yourself. Your fate has been the result of your choices for the most part, even taking all the shit that's happened to you in to account.

But the lyrics are really heartening as well. "Be the girl you loved" means so many good things at once. First, remember the ones you've loved and try to become like them. Secondly love yourself; be the on you love. Thirdly, remember yourself. Stay true to yourself. And roll up your sleeves and work to impress yourself like you would for a lover.

So what Kanye said he loves his music? Why does it bother people that a rap artist likes someone outside of hip hop and mentions him positively like he's trying to be them? He's not the most well known artist out there and Kanye draws ears and has tastes for every kind of music out there. He's as much a fan as he is a musician. The entire album was made under his guidance and his influence, in addition to Bon Iver.

I for one find him an incredible artist and knew about him without Yeezy mentioning him. He's a great artist and I'm just glad that more recognition for his music is being brought upon by someone as big as he is.

Is this an American thing? as someone from the U.K.,when I heard him in about 2010/11 on 'limit to your love' I pictured him pretty much as he is....a slightly posh, slender white guy from down south...even to an English guy he sounds VERY English.

I think the reason I like this song so very much, apart from Blake's beautiful rendering, is that it speaks to where I am as a 65 year old African American woman. I've seen some hard times some of which resulted from my own bad decisions hence the reason "...in a world you've grown" truly resonates with me. My friends ARE gone some of whom I lost decades ago to death and others to life. And yet, I feel very much inspired to keep keepin' on, to not "let the hurdle fall". I've traveled the world ALONE challenging myself to go forth and see for myself-- first to South Africa at 58 (a year after Mandela's death) and then to Algeria & Turkey just last year. I REFUSE to surrender before my time. Come heck or high water, if HE permits, I will be taking the COVID vaccine for the girl I love.

+Isaac Sagoe Mankind would be fine. Sure, a lot of people in all the big metropolitan cities would be instantly killed. But the ones who live in rural areas would survive and be fine. It's true that farming would be difficult because of the nuclear winter, but it wouldn't be impossible. Plus the country folks are used to harsh conditions so they would survive. It would be interesting to see what kind of new world they would build though.

Everyone pulls their own meanings from lyrics in songs, which is what makes them so accessible to the bulk of people.

For me "Retrograde" as a definition is 'coming down from a higher orbit / burn up or "re enter" the atmosphere and end up if successful "back to earth".
Many metaphors to be explored but for me.

This song rings true for isolation, depression etc. Pushing friends away, once daily pleasures and achievements, interactions, friends and form "in a world you've grown"
But that is the nature of music, people pull from lyrics and music what they feel, but this for me was acknowledgement to things and meanings I made from the lyrics,
