Blunt was educated at Elstree School, Woolhampton, then Harrow School (where he received his nickname 'Blunty'), and finally the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Before the release of his album, Blunt was a commissioned officer in the British Army, rose to the rank of Captain and served as a NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo. He was also on duty for the funeral of the Queen Mother on 9th April, 2002.
He is currently signed to Linda Perry's American label Custard, and became the first British artist to top the American singles chart in nearly a decade when his first single from Back to Bedlam, "You're Beautiful", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006. The last British artist to do so had been Elton John in 1997 with the song Candle in the Wind.
His second album, All The Lost Souls, was released on 17th September 2007.
His third album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released on 8th November 2010.

The song "Love Love Love" by James Blunt is rich in complex emotions and paints a picture of a heartbroken man who cannot bear to fall in love again. The opening lines, "I'm not looking for us, and neither should you," suggests the singer does not want to get involved in a relationship, and neither should the other person. Although he finds the other person gorgeous, he doesn't believe in true love anymore, and whatever he says is not true. He admits to lying to himself and to the other person, as he doesn't want to get hurt again. He is fool enough to believe that by doing so, he is saving them from pain.
The lyrics, "I will wrap my body in other women's arms, make love in a hurry, feel better than I am," suggests that the singer will replace love with mere physical intimacy with other women. He hopes the other person will find themselves in someone else's eyes and not be hurt by him. He repeats the phrase, "cause I love anybody fool enough to believe," implying he is trying to protect himself by pushing others away. The phrase "It's a lie that sets you free" indicates a paradoxical situation. On one hand, the lie sets the other person free from heartbreak, but on the other, it traps the singer in his own deception.
