So Far Gone
James Blunt Lyrics

Behind a smile you're hiding
All the things I know you want to say
We tried our best to find us
But there are no lights to guide us
I can't sleep beside a stranger now
With every beat slows down my heart
So I'll just say what you won't say
And I'll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone
Yeah, we're so far gone
I've tried hard to remember
This prison cell used to be a shelter
Now we're just looking for the best way out
And I can't fight you anymore
You're already one foot out the door
So I'll just say what you won't say
And I'll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone,
Yeah we're so far gone
And this is the face of letting go
And these are things we already know
So I'll just say what you won't say
And I'll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone
We're so far gone
So I'll just say what you won't say
And I'll take the blame if it is for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone,
Yea we're so far gone
Yea we're so far gone
So I'll just say what you won't say
The lyrics of James Blunt's song So Far Gone explore a situation where a couple is struggling to keep their relationship alive. The first verse reveals the idea that the woman is trying to hide her pain behind a smile, and the man knows there are things she wants to say but can't. The couple tried to find their way back to each other, but they seem to be lost, and the man can't bring himself to sleep in the same bed with a stranger. The chorus affirms their distance and the fact that they've drifted too far to come back, "we're so far gone," as the man feels his heart breaking, it becomes apparent that their relationship is crumbling piece by piece.
The second verse deepens the mood; it reveals that what was once a haven has become a prison cell from which they both want to escape. The man has accepted the fact that there is nothing he can say to keep her from leaving. He tries to take the blame if it is for her sake, but he also affirms the impossibility of going back to fix what they have lost. The bridge of the song reinforces what the chorus has already implied, that they're finally letting go of each other and that they know they're so far gone, and it's time to confront the inevitable.
Overall, the song deals with the idea of trying to hold on to something that is falling apart. The themes are reflective and deal with finding acceptance for things that cannot be changed, especially when it comes to relationships, and that sometimes it's better to let go than fight a losing battle. James Blunt is keen on expressing the emotions of his lyrics, and the song's tone is the representation of the sadness and regret that comes with letting go of someone you once loved.

Tell me the wars you're fighting
Please confide in me about the battles you're facing
Behind a smile you're hiding
Despite the facade of happiness, you're concealing your struggles
All the things I know you want to say
I can sense that you have thoughts that you're not vocalizing
We tried our best to find us
We made a genuine effort to keep our relationship alive
But there are no lights to guide us
We're lost without any clear direction or guidance
I can't sleep beside a stranger now
I can no longer lie next to someone who feels unfamiliar to me
Piece by piece we fall apart
Gradually, we're disintegrating emotionally
With every beat slows down my heart
It hurts me more and more with each passing moment
So I'll just say what you won't say
I will speak the words that you're avoiding
And I'll take the blame if it is for your sake
I'm willing to take responsibility for the situation if it benefits you
No turning back on what you can't save
We cannot change what is beyond rescue
So far gone
We've reached a point of no return
Yeah, we're so far gone
Indeed, we've come too far down this path
I've tried hard to remember
I've made a conscious effort to reminisce about happier times
This prison cell used to be a shelter
Our once safe haven has become a place of confinement and misery
Now we're just looking for the best way out
We're trying to find a solution to escape our present predicament
And I can't fight you anymore
I am exhausted from battling with you
You're already one foot out the door
You've given up on us and are ready to leave
And this is the face of letting go
This is what it feels like to release our hold on each other
And these are things we already know
Deep down, we both know the reality of our situation
Yea we're so far gone
There's no denying that we've reached a point of no return
