Stand By Me
James Brown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you touch me
When you touch me
Good God

When you touch me
Lookie here
I can't stand it
Can't stand it
I can't stand your love
I can't stand your love

You don't love nobody else
Get back; I can't stand myself
Can't stand your love
Good God

Early in the morning
Can't get it right
Had a little time
With my baby last night

Early in the morning
Gotta do the walk
My baby, just let me talk

When you touch me, good God
When you touch me, all right
Come on, baby, hold my hand
Just want you to know
I'm a soul man

Can't stand it
Can't stand it
Can't stand it; lookie here

Can't stand it, baby
Can't stand it
Can't stand your love
Can't stand it
I can't stand your love

Lookie here, baby
What you want me to do?
Baby, what you want me to do?
You made me, made me love you

You give me fever; my body's wet
You give me fever, break out
In a cold sweat

Baby, good God
Baby, lookie here
Sometimes I want you
Sometime I call
Sometimes I ring so hard

Come on, good God
Baby, lookie here
Can't stand your love
Can't stand your love
Can't try your love
Can't stand your love

I can't stand it
I can't stand it, good God
Can't stand it, all right
I can't stand it, all right

Bass, lookie here
Bass, Tim
Help me out, Tim
Show me how you work
A little bit, Tim

Good God, Good God
All right, can't stand it

Wait a minute, Tim
Let me get this whole thing
Together over here

Can't stand it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of James Brown’s song “I Can't Stand Myself” describe the intensity of his relationship with somebody who he cannot resist, despite the strong emotions it evokes. The song begins with Brown’s voice exclaiming “Good God” as his lover touches him, conveying the overwhelming nature of their physical attraction. He repeats in the chorus that he cannot stand this love, further emphasizing how their relationship consumes him. Brown sings that his lover only loves him, but he urges them to back off as he cannot handle the intensity of their emotions.

The song later shifts to Brown reminiscing about a night he spent with his lover. He describes how he cannot get it right and feels like he needs to do the walk, a popular dance move from the 60s, to make it through the day. Despite the pain his lover causes him, he still calls himself a “soul man,” perhaps insinuating that their relationship is worth the struggle it comes with. The song ends with Brown’s cry of “Good God” echoing, capturing the passion and intensity of his emotions.

Overall, “I Can’t Stand Myself” portrays a tumultuous relationship full of extremes, from overwhelming passion to agony, conveying Brown’s inability to resist the immense power of love.

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
So darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
And darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now
Stand by me, stand by me
And darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now
Stand by me, stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Won't you stand by

I was adopted by my father who was African American I was a Caucasian boy. I was bullied all the time because my father and I looked so different but he would always tell me, we may look a little different on the outside but we are all the same it’s not what counts on The outside but what’s inside you as a person that’s where your real worth is .my father was an amazing man I worked hard In all aspects whether it would be school training martial arts self defence.
This man was truly my real father no one could make me feel otherwise.

In 1968 I head Ben E. King sing this song at a small club on the coast of SC. King had a small band of 3 or 4 guys and I can still remember the single violin. The venue was not air conditioned. I was 18. The girl I was with was 17. 52 years later we are still a couple. And I still love the song.
