His life took a turn, though, as he became a victim of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as stints with manic depression that found him hospitalized in a mental health facility. He had almost disappeared entirely when he started performing again on rare occasions in the early 1990s, often working with Tyrone Davis or Otis Clay.
Carr had suffered from lung cancer for many years, spending the end of his life in a nursing home in Memphis. At the age of 58, James Carr died there from his battle with the disease on January 7, 2001. It is said that he had been analphabetic.

In her lover fingers
Than you've got
In all of your heart
And when you go for shopping
Tenderness, baby, baby
That's when her tenderness starts
She won't lie to me
Like you've done
Now to see her lying
There's something she just wouldn't do
She's got more love (More love)
More love (More love)
In her little finger, oh
Then you've got
In all of you
She's everything
A girl should've be
She's kind, she's good
And she's so true, oh yeah
And when I look
Into her little eyes
That's like that a love
Like that is missing in you
Oh, she just kisses me once
And that's all I really need
But what her tell me
That we'll never apart
She's got more love (More love)
More love (More love)
In her little finger
Then you've got
In all of you
In James Carr's song "More Love," he compares his current love interest to a previous partner. He sings about how his new partner has more love in her little finger than his previous partner had in her whole heart. He also mentions how his current partner's tenderness only starts when they go shopping. He then goes on to say that she won't lie to him like his previous partner did. He believes that the new love interest is everything a girl should be; kind, good, and true.
Carr expresses his love for his partner in a way that highlights the fact that he has found someone who truly loves him. He talks about how even just one kiss from her is all he needs to feel loved. This is in stark contrast to his previous partner who may have been dishonest and not as loving. The song seems to suggest that love isn't just about saying the right things or doing the right things, it's about feeling it in your heart and truly meaning it.
Overall, James Carr's "More Love" is a powerful love song that speaks to the heart. It's about finding someone who truly loves you and cherishing that person. The song is a reminder that love is not just about physical attraction, but about the deep connection between two people.
