Funk #49
James Gang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Uh, sleep all day, out all night,
I know where you're going.
I don't that's a-acting right,
You don't think it's showing.
A-jumpin' up, fallin' down,
Don't misunderstand me.
You don't think that I know your plan,
What you try'n to hand me?

Out all night, sleep all day,
I know what you're doing.

If you're gonna a-act that way,
Think there's trouble brewing.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to James Gang's song Funk #49 describe a person who is aware of their partner's behavior and intentions. The first verse implies that the person in question is not acting right, regardless of whether or not they think they are getting away with it. The second verse further emphasizes this sentiment by stating that if the person continues to act in such a way, trouble is sure to follow.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "out all night, sleep all day" which suggests that the person in question is living a reckless and irresponsible lifestyle. The listener can infer that this lifestyle is causing strain on their relationships and ultimately leading to consequences.

Overall, the song seems to be a warning to someone who is engaging in self-destructive behavior. The tone is somewhat accusatory, but also indicates a level of concern and care for the person being addressed.

I am a 70 year African American but let it be said more American. I love this music, I play bass guitar and my band rocked our School dances with this music. This music is one of the many things that helped make America Great. Keep the music true. God Bless us all.
