Hi, geology prof here. If you end up editing this at some point, it would be cool to replace "carbon" dating with "radiometric" dating. Geologists rarely use carbon and the two big reasons C-14 would not be used here is 1) rocks typically don't contain much carbon to be useful, and shale and sandstone certainly won't, and 2) C-14 has a short half-life and can only be used to date things less than 50,000 years or so.

But also, radiometric dating is largely useless when it comes to sedimentary rocks, since the processes of erosion, transportation, and cementation won't reset the radiometric clock, so you'd just get the date those little quartz bits originally cooled from a melt in an igneous body somewhere. These layers are instead dated due to principles of correlation with fossil-bearing strata across the UK, which may also contain ash layers or lava flows, or other distinctive layers we CAN date (those are igneous materials, and therefore can be dated directly, pending enough ratio of parent-daughter elements). So it ends up being relative dating that saves the day, as usual. In related news, I'd love a video on William "Stata" Smith as well.

What happens when the radiometric dating is used on a know lava flow of the 1800's (fact established) and it shows an old age? What happens if during the rocks being laid down the lead was leached and it's actually a new formation but due to the protocols and assumptions in going into this type of dating the lead % is actually false? And third...do you really believe rained on rocks 3 billion years ago so how ran or the like was produced and over the last 3 billion years without any direction or orchestration we are able to have this conversation? Just a philosophical question apart from objective observable data.

I know just about nothing about geology but I don't understand how in the 1700's a man was able to determine how those rocks were formed. How does a man with the tools at the time come to hypothesis that those formations require time and pressure. Blows my mind.

+Carl M You've only got half the story. Not only did his theory clash with geological thinking of the time, but nobody knew of a physical process by which the sun could have remained burning for millions of years. Until we had that explanation, his theory - and evolution - was scientifically untenable. The flip side of this is that if you now want to claim the earth is only 6 thousand years old, you need to explain why subatomic physics works like it does. Hence the standard copout of god providing all that evidence as a practical joke. Not my kind of deity!

I think I did find of geology in middle school. I recognize the rock stages: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary, among others like molten rock as well as the layers of Earth and its atmosphere at a 5-8th and high school grade level but not the actual math for it.

C14 dating has very limited usefulness in Geology due to its limited range (around 60, 000 or less [usually under 20,000]). I believe what you intended to say was radiometric age dating (such as K/Ar or Lead dating) with ranges of dating into the millions and billions of years.

Radiocarbon dating only works for dating objects younger than about 50,000 years. So it is much more useful in archaeology than in geology, but radioactive lead dating is useful for determining the age of rocks in many cases.

I'm sure someone else has made this observation on this post but most rock, like sandstone, are not carbon dated. Other isotopes are used with igneous rock. Sandstones are usually dated by their sequence relative to other strata.

Also Hank, I though Hutton's most famous discovery sight was Hutton's Locality where pink granite intersects with sandstone. Before he pointed such out, people thought granite was a primordial rock which had been formed when the Christian God created the Earth. Hutton's Locality showed evidence that the granite injection was younger than the sandstone (sedimentary rock), dethroning it as the oldest substance in relative antiquity.

Studying Hutton and other early geologists was THE major reason I got away from Intelligent Design. So many brilliant Christian thinkers, who started out believing whole-heartedly in the the flood-myth and saw evidence written on the world to contradict their beliefs--that really destroyed the myths I had heard in creationism about "secularists" taking over science and inserting their worldview. And it still fills me with awe that all these passionate people, with strong prejudicing beliefs got past their beliefs to find the truth. Honestly, how hard is that for anyone, with any belief, to do most of the time?

Just watched Vsauce2 vid before this about lava, so here's a random question: is man-made granite possible? Can we heat up base materials hot enough and let them cool to form Granite? Just wondering if much of the granite in modern architecture is man-made in such a way, or actually earth-made, mined, refined and sculpted. I've always thought as the Earth's core as (predominaly) soft iron, iron-organic-compounds [as intermediates], and small ('small' compared to iron content) contents of amalgams [not consisting of iron, because Fe doesn't form an alloy with Hg]; all while the Earh's core is engaged in a reflux reaction heated by it's own reactants and cooled by the surface around the core. And I believe it will take eons to cease this reflux condensed at such high pressure.
Anyone want to have s friendly sciencetific debate, or criticism on my beliefs? :) Don't be scared! I like when people challenge my thoughts- I encourage it! Please do! :P

Darwin was a bit of a floater, too. It was called "The Voyage of the Beagle". A good part of the reason he was aboard was that he had not determined on a career. He was more or less forced into publishing "The Origin of Species by Wallace's paper. Being a genius, he was not too stupid to see the results, personal as well as professional. Good, nevertheless carbon dating only works for very young materials (50 k) and of organic origin, not useful for dating old rocks, it will be better to talk about radiometric dating in general or U-Pb dating is one of the best for rocks.

In that radiocarbon dating is only good for about 50,000 years, it would not have been much good to him other than to thumb his nose at those that maintained the Earth was only 6,000 years old.

Hutton’s ideas didn’t take time to catch on because they went against the belief of the Earth being 6000 years old, they took time to catch on because his writing was incredibly difficult to follow. Imagine monotone tax code but written in Shakespearean prose with random and obscure Latin phrases thrown in. And this at a time when most people were illiterate. When his ideas were later rewritten to be understood by the layman, it was then that they really took off.

CARBON dating? I think you misspoke as CD only works up to around 50,000 years, iirc, and isn't used to date any rocks. One or more of several radiometric dating methods is used for rocks. Otherwise a good video.

Hey guys,
A small amount of feedback. Carbon Dating is almost never used to date rocks, due to the relatively short half-life of 14C you can only date something up until around 45,000-50,000 years old, which is most certainly not most rocks! Radioisotope dating of rocks is usually done with isotopic ratios that last a LOT longer like U-Pb dating from very labile zircon crystals or Sm-Nd in silicate minerals.

Moad is correct, as granite is an intrusive igneous rock (magma emplaced within some parent rock that slowly cools over time) Although, people might say it's of a trivial difference (between lava and magma), it's important to use proper terminology. You wouldn't make a video that calls to call a proton an electron, or call nuclear fusion, fission. Using proper terminology, eliminates confusion.

You're right. Technically, Granites form from magma. But I don't think that it's something of particular importance for the general public. Unless they are geology students or geology enthusiasts, people really don't have to know the proper terms. Just the general idea (the episode is about James Hutton). SciShow researchers must be more careful next time though..

The problem with Uniformitarianism is that it only works in one direction. It does correctly explain how things happen, but if and only if there has been no major catastrophe in the meantime. You have to make that huge assumption that no catastrophe has occurred. Catastrophism has the same problem, just in reverse. You have to assume a catastrophe has happened. Take the Mt. St. Helens eruption. Things that normally take thousands of years to occur happened in mere minutes or hours, thanks to a catastrophe. Stalagtites and stalagmites also form in special circumstances (like under manmade bridges or during floods) that under normal circumstances would take thousands of years. Either way, one has to pick a certain rate and assume the rest. The same can be said for carbon dating and the like, where the original quantities of the isotope are assumed, based on modern measurements of other materials or asteroids. It does not, in any way, prove the original isotope ratios at the time of formation of those rocks. That, once again, has to be assumed.

The most convincing forms of measurement or evidence are those which cannot be affected by catastrophes, outside sources, or other influences. Things that operate one way, and only one way, without deviation or manipulation.

Hutton suggested we look to events now happening on the earth as the key to understanding what had happened on the earth. Volcanic eruptions happen, and can quickly blanket an area resulting in catastrophic destruction - catastrophes at that level are part of what he envisioned. He did not "rule out" the possibility of a meteor (say) hitting the earth and causing a world-wide catastophe that would destroy life - he just didn't address it. How could he? There was no evidence, in Hutton's day, to lead to such a conclusion. That came later, when Cuvier began to discover species forms in rock strata, and wondered why they had all disappeared, etc.

Lyell, 40 years after Hutton, is the one who began to make the idea of 'uniform' processes much more rigid, not just a starting-point assumption about past earth behavior, but sort of a 'rule'. By then Cuvier's theories of catastrophes were in full swing and Lyell wanted to push back, in favor of constantly-operating forces again.

The movement of tectonic plates ... an example of a force that is underway (and has been underway) as a constant force in earth surface activity, so far as we know, for hundreds of millions or billions years... we just didn't realize it until quite recently

I've heard modern geology be described as "Actualism" as opposed to gradualism or catastrophism. Because it acknowledges that both perfectly uniform processes and less uniform sudden transformations both play a part in our planet's history.
