Last learned how to play piano as child, switching to bass as a teenager. He joined Hans-Gunther Oesterreich's Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra in 1946, when he was 17 years old. In 1948, he became the leader of the Becker-Last Ensemble, which performed for seven years. During that time, he was voted as the best bassist in the country by a German jazz poll for three consecutive years, from 1950-1952. After the disbandment of the Becker-Last Ensemble, he became the in-house arranger for Polydor Records, as well as for a number of European radio stations. For the next decade, he helped arrange hits for artists like Helmut Zacharias and Caterina Valente.
Last released his first album "Non-Stop Dancing" in 1965. The record of brief renditions of popular songs, all tied together by an insistent dance beat and joyous crowd noises. It was a hit and helped make him a major European star. Over the next four decades, Last has released over 190 records, including several more volumes of Non-Stop Dancing. On these records, he varies his formula by adding different songs from different countries and genres, as well as guest performers like Richard Clayderman and Astrud Gilberto.
Though his concerts and albums are consistently successful — especially in England, where he had 52 hit albums between 1967-1986, which made him second to Elvis Presley in terms of number of charting records — he has only had two hit singles with "The Seduction," the theme from American Gigolo (1980) and Biscaya from the album "Biscaya".
He has won numerous polls and prizes, for example Billboard magazine's "Star of the year" trophy in 1976, and has been honored for his lifework with the German ECHO prize in 1994.
The song "The Lonely Shepherd", written by Last and performed by Gheorghe Zamfir and the James Last Orchestra, was featured in the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (2003).
Personally, he divides his time between Florida and Germany. He gives much credit to his wife and son, who helps with the music.
Morning
James Last Lyrics

I can't explain just the way I feel
Strange as if they seemed,
But in my mind she was very real
Once on a Sunday morning
Before the sunlight was in the air
Once on a Sunday morning
Reaching for my hand
She smiled at me and we walked away
Tried to understand,
But I could see through a sunny day
Once on a Sunday morning
Before the sunlight was in the air
Once on a Sunday morning
Before my eyes she was standing there
Saturday was done
I went to bed, but I couldn't sleep
Sunday came along, the memory I will always keep
Once on a Sunday morning
Before the sunlight was in the air
Once on a Sunday morning
Before my eyes she was standing there
The lyrics of James Last's song "Morning" depict a dream that the singer had, where he encounters a mysterious woman. The singer describes his inability to fully express the emotions that he experienced during the dream, suggesting that the experience was overwhelming and difficult to understand. The woman in the dream is described as seeming strange, yet also undeniably real in the singer's mind.
The dream takes place on a Sunday morning, before the sunlight has fully emerged. In the dream, the woman reaches for the singer's hand and they walk away together. Despite the singer's attempts to understand the dream, he is left with the memory of the encounter lingering in his mind long after awakening.
The song appears to be less about a literal occurrence and more about an emotional experience or state of being. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for the way that strong emotions or desires can feel real and tangible, even if they are not based in reality. The lyrics suggest that the singer was left with a sense of loss or longing after the dream, as seen in the line "the memory I will always keep."

Sevmiştim bende bir zamanlar
Ayrıldık saçmasapanca ve sebepsizce
Tamda unuttuğum düşüncelerdeydim her şeyi
Aklıma bile gelmez olmuştu sanki onca yaşananlar
Öylece geçti uzunca bir zaman.
Gençliğimle beraber yıllar yılı gitti peşin sıra
Hayata sarıldım onsuzda oluyordu heralde
Belkide ben öyle zannetmek istiyordum.
Yine sıradan bir geceydi yorgun ve uykuluydum.
Bir rüyayla Sızladı kalbimin taa derinlikleri
Gerçek olmadığını biliyordum gördüklerimin
Uyandım aniden tarifsiz duygularla
Herşeyi yeniden yaşamış gibiydim
İki hayat arasında sıkışıp kaldım bir anda
çokta denedim kafamdan silip atmayı
Unutamadımki onca gençlik hatırâlarını
Anılar Bir bir canlandı gözlerimde.
Nasılda dalıp gitmişim uzaklara
Severken ayrılmak ne de zormuş meğerse
unuttum demek kendini kandırmakmış sadece.
..............Unutamadım ..........
......Anladım çok geç......
