Marsden got his first job in 1993 on a series of episodes of The Nanny as Eddie, Margaret Sheffield's boyfriend.
In 2007, Marsden played Corny Collins in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the 1988 John Waters movie Hairspray alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Nikki Blonsky, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah and John Travolta. There he also made his musical debut by singing two of the film's songs, "The Nicest Kids In Town" and "(It's) Hairspray." Both "Hairspray" and the film's soundtrack were critically acclaimed. The soundtrack has sold over 1,200,000 copies to date in the United States, and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. His next role was in the Disney hybrid animated/live action film Enchanted, playing Prince Edward with co-stars Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon, Idina Menzel, Timothy Spall and Patrick Dempsey. He sang one song as a duet with Amy Adams at the beginning of the film and a duet with Idina Menzel that was cut from the film. '
(2.) James Marsden - video game composer, with Joris de Man.

Oh, rvery afternoon
When the clock strikes four
A crazy bunch of kids
Crash through that door, yeah
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Go and throw off their coats
And leave the squares behind
And then they shake it, shake it, shake it
Like they're losing their mind
You'll never see them frown
'Cause they're the nicest kids in town
(Ooh, ooh, ooh ooh)
Oh, every afternoon
You turn your TV On, huh
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
Yeah, we know you turn the sound up
When your parents are gone, yeah
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
Then you twist and shout
For your favorite star
And when you've practiced every step
That's in your repertoire
You better come on down
And meet the nicest kids in town, woo
Nice white kids
Who like to lead the way
And once a month
We have our "Negro day!"
And I'm the man who keeps it spinnin' 'round
Mr. Corny Collins
With the latest, greatest Baltimore sound!(Woo)
So every afternoon
Drop everything, woo
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Who needs to read and write
When you can dance and sing? Yeah
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Forget about your algebra
And calculus
You can always do your homework
On the morning bus
Can't tell a verb from a noun

James Marsden's song The Nicest Kid's In Town is a nostalgic tribute to the 1962 musical film Hairspray that tells the story of a charming but feisty teenager named Tracy Turnblad as she pursues her dream of stardom in the popular dance show "The Corny Collins Show". The lyrics vividly describe the madness and excitement that surrounds the show as teenagers from Baltimore gather around their TV sets every afternoon to watch their favorite stars dance, twist and shout to the latest, greatest Baltimore sound. As the song progresses, we learn that the show's popularity is not only due to the music but also due to its popularity as a platform for promoting social justice. The show's host, Mr. Corny Collins, proudly introduces the show's monthly "Negro Day" while the lyrics imply that the "nice white kids" in the show do not shy away from supporting their black counterparts. The song ends on a high note with the kids of all colors and creeds being hailed as the nicest kids in town.

It's funny because TV hosts of that era actually said things like that.

@Tami Really?! I thought TV censorship was pretty strict in the 1950s
