Bad
James Marsters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We met, we smiled
I put my arm around you
The camera flashed and it was over
My face was flushed
You turned and walked away
But in my pocket was your number
And I'm thinking
Who's that girl who smiles and hides at the same time
I really think she's got issues
The way she looks at me I can tell what a kiss brings
And if I taste her pain is that a crime

That night
We're upstairs in my room
I'm trying to ply you
With champagne and caviar
But you just wrinkle up your face
Won't get off second base
I'm trippin' on how strong you are

Oh my toes start dancing when you kiss me
You pull me down and I like it
Then my head explodes and I know something's hit me
You make me want to be bad...yeah

I am a monkey behind glass
Turn on the lights have a laugh
Get up you filthy thing and dance
And you would come across the sea
Give me kisses that would speak
Of your seven lonely oceans

Who are you to smile and hide at the same time
I really like your issues

The way you look at me I can tell what a kiss brings
You make me want to be bad... yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Bad" by James Marsters, well-known for his role as Spike in the hit TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a passionate yet complex story of desire, seduction, and self-discovery. In the first verse, he narrates how he meets a girl and captures her beauty in a photo, but he is uncertain about her true intentions as she hides her emotions behind a smile. He is intrigued by her enigmatic nature and decides to pursue her, wondering if the risk of tasting her pain is worth it.

In the second verse, he takes her to his room and tries to impress her with champagne and caviar, but she remains uninterested and won't go beyond second base. However, he cannot resist her allure and feels a strong chemistry whenever they kiss, even if it means being "bad". In the third verse, he describes himself as a monkey behind glass, suggesting that he is trapped by societal norms and expectations, while the girl he is enamored with is a traveler who can offer him a glimpse of the unknown, speaking of "seven lonely oceans". The chorus repeats the theme of the intoxicating power of their connection, as Marsters sings, "You make me want to be bad...yeah", conveying his yearning for a passion that is beyond his control.

The first part of the song tells a bit about how James met his wife Jasmin. He had her number in his jeans but lost it. She had his number, but one number was wrong. So she dailed every combination over a half year before she reached him! Now they are married over a year and James will have his 50th birthday on the 20th of August!
