James released two EP's during his solo career (Who I Am - EP in late 2009 and Letters to You in early 2010) until he decided he wanted to be in a band and started working with Brad Simpson in late 2011.
James is currently the lead guitarist in The Vamps, a pop band he formed with Brad, Connor Ball and Tristan Evans.

The lyrics to James McVey's song "Who I Am" express feelings of being watched and not truly understood by someone else. The first verse describes this sense of being observed, but unsure about whether or not it feels right. The chorus repeats the central theme of the song, which is that the person watching does not truly know who the singer is and never will be a part of their life. The second verse describes feeling trapped and weighed down by the presence of this person, and the frustration that comes with not feeling understood.
The overall message of the song seems to be that we are all searching for a sense of identity and a place where we belong. The singer is struggling to find that sense of belonging, but feels as though this person watching them is holding them back.
