Simple thing
James Michael Lyrics

I can ride, I can ride
I'm such a Dramamine slave
I see stars but I'm alive
I will get you a stereo
And I will fuck it up
You know I will
Why can't you bring me my car?
I can drive, I can drive
You're so theatrical, babe
I see God but I'm alive
And I could get you back
And I could give you "falling"
You've got to be the one to turn me in
My simple thing
My simple thing
You've got to learn to make me laugh again
My simple thing
My simple thing
You've got to be the one to close me in
My simple thing
My simple thing
I will get you a stereo
And I will fuck it up
You know I will
'Cause I allow myself to fall around you
The lyrics of James Michael's song Simple Thing convey a sense of longing and dependency on another individual to fill a void within the singer's life. The opening line, "I've got to get me a wave I can ride," suggests that the singer is seeking something to cling onto, a source of stability in the tumultuous waters of life. They admit to being a "Dramamine slave," indicating that they are prone to motion sickness, both literally and metaphorically, and are constantly seeking some sort of balance.
The singer's fixation on this person is made clear in the line, "I will get you a stereo and I will fuck it up / You know I will / 'Cause I allow myself to fall around you." The singer is willing to do anything to please this person, even if it means sabotaging their own possessions. They understand their own shortcomings and seem to be begging for the other person's attention and affection. This is further emphasized in the repetition of the phrase "My simple thing," which could refer to the other person and the simplicity they bring to the singer's life. The singer is essentially putting their happiness in the hands of this person and asking them to be the one to make them feel whole again.
