Completely charming! I was familiar with the version that turned out to be The 5th Dimension's last charting single. I much prefer this version. Great to see and hear James Shigeta as the priest. And I believe I hear Thurl Ravenscroft in the bass section of the soundtrack choir. I'll be playing this Bacharach/David composition (one of the very last of their monumental partnership) obsessively for a while!

The last collaboration of Bacharach and David, and the reason for their acrimonious split. The backstory of the troubled production is much more interesting than the film itself. Also the last big production launched by Ross Hunter (AIRPORT).

The part from 3:22 to 3:56 is actually a reprise of the song. It follows the "Fertility Dance" number which had been cut from the film after test screenings. It has long been restored to the film bringing the musical number back to it's original 5 to 7 minute glory

The movie was one of the last of its kind for a reason. Its budget ballooned to the point where it cost much more than it earned. The studios came to realize that the big-budget, All-Star musical was no longer sustainable. Beautiful movies like My Fair Lady were expensive too, but they were beloved because they were actually made to entertain an audience, not to lecture it on “morality.”

Good song...I prefer the 5th Dimension's version...it has the "trademark" Bacharach hook at the beginning and a different rhythm.

Yes, they did. Musicals like this was so out of date in 1973. This have worked in 1960 but in a time of Vietnam, Civil Rights, Women’s Liberation, Environment, and Gay Rights Movements beginning to take hold, no one wanted to see this.

“Nice” does not mean good, and by the way, the movie is not so nice, either. It says that when two men love a woman, the one who loves her less is expected to give way to the one who loves her more. Apparently the woman is incapable of making her own assessment of each man or her own choice. Nice is a characteristic, not a virtue. Also, the Asian people function as servants while the white people get access to the library and the better lands. What is so nice about that? If by “Nice,” What is meant is that the movie does not offend middle-aged and older white-person sensibility, this is the nicest movie ever made. Without being actually any good.

You make a valid point. The producers of this movie could have really had something good if just a little ( or a LOT of)diversity had been added in regards to the actors cast. In Hilton's novel, the characters of Elizabeth and Maria were written as a single character, a Chinese lady . Simply casting these 2 roles with Asian actors would have made a good start. Also in the novel , the Shangri La haven was filled with many priests in residence, of all ages, from all over Asia.- Chinese, Russian, Indian, Tibeten, Nepalese- this story has so much potential. I dont know what bozo came up with a vision of wise white characters providing " guidance" for the poor and grateful Asians. This movie was made in 1972- maybe all the movie execs were on LSD. What a waste!

Oh, you're so silly. All women want is a man that will love them so its natural and noble of the men in this picture to decide amongst themselves which fellow deserves to get the girl. Its nice AND its good! What would you have be the determinant? A dowery? An exchange of money? A contest of violence?

This movie catered to middle class white Americans from 1973, whats wrong with that? There are Indian movies that cater to Indians, and Japanese movies that cater to the Japanese.

The West provided leadership in Asia for centuries. They provided roads and hospitals and education, and modern government. Its only natural that in Shangra-La, they would still play a leading role in providing firm yet benevolent guidance.

When you compare this to the other musical of the year,' "Cabaret", it REALLY pales by comparison. The acting, the direction, the 'choreography' the costumes, are all just dreadful in this film. What a waste of some good actors and Bacharach & David.

@A YouTube channel. Some, as songs, maybe, but not as presented and sung in the film. Bacharach is a terrific songwriter, but this was his great downfall and seriously damaged his career and reputation.

Sickly sweet, stilted, awful. Lyrics are inane and the song isn’t even hummable. I don’t need a critic to tell m how wretched this is.

I don't agree. MY FAIR LADY was so acclaimed, but was it really that good? Just about the whole score is forgettable. I think that this song is just as good as anything in FAIR/LADY.

@65wiseman I can name at least two characters in My Fair Lady. I don't remember any of the names of any of the characters in Lost Horizon. You're right - My Fair Lady is overrated. But a movie can be vastly overrated and still be a million times better than ost Horizon. That's a low bar to clear. But, it's only my opinion. Sweet Charity, Cabaret, Camelot, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Oklahoma!, just to name a few, are better as well
