Boys & Girls
James TW Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were thirteen years old when you started coming over
Told each other everything
We kept getting closer
You'd talk about the boys
And I'd give you my advice
And you'd tell me what to say to all of the girls I like

But when I saw you get close to him
Then I knew it was serious
Something inside of me lit up a fire
Can't help if something's changed

I guess boys and girls try to pretend
They're not catching feelings
When they're catching feelings
I guess boys and girls
Just can't be friends
Without catching feelings
Cause I'm catching feelings

We turned sixteen years old and you asked the question
Don't you want something more, the deeper connection?
I saw what it meant to you
But didn't know what to say
We had so much to lose
But I kissed you anyway

Started losing our innocence
And things got too serious
Something inside of you lit up a fire
Can't help if something's changed

I guess boys and girls try to pretend
They're not catching feelings
When they're catching feelings
I guess boys and girls
Just can't be friends
Without catching feelings
Cause you're catching feelings

Now we're eighteen years old
And you barely come over
Cause while I'm with someone new
You're still finding closure
And all I can do is think
Why did we have to lose?
Cause us in the early days was my favorite me and you
What did we do?

I guess boys and girls (I guess boys and girls)
Oh, boys and girls (All the boys and girls)
They're catching feelings (They're catching feelings)
They're catching feelings, oh

I guess boys and girls (I guess boys and girls)
Just can't be friends (They just can't be friends)
Without catching feelings (Without catching feelings)
Cause we're catching feelings

Without catching feelings
Cause we're catching feelings

Overall Meaning

In James TW's song "Boys & Girls," the lyrics depict a story of two friends, a boy and a girl, who share a close relationship since they were thirteen years old. They share every detail of their lives with each other, which brings them closer, and the boy even advises the girl on how to interact with other boys. The girl reciprocates by giving him input on how to impress girls he likes. However, the boy realizes that he is catching feelings when he sees the girl getting closer to someone else. Then, when they turn sixteen, the girl asks for something more than just a friendship.

This request puts the boy in a precarious position, and he doesn't know what to say or do. But he decides to kiss her, and they both lose their innocence, and things become too serious. The boy thinks they probably lost what was so special about their relationship. Now they are eighteen years old, and the girl barely comes over. The boy has moved on with someone else, but the girl seems to be still finding closure. The boy laments on why they had to lose their friendship.

"Boys & Girls" narrates a tale of unrequited love and unspoken feelings between the two friends. It showcases how people get caught up in their emotions, try to suppress their true feelings, and end up losing a beautiful friendship that meant the world to them. It is a beautiful song with a deep meaning that the listener can relate to.

@ccpp4098

Wow. Really fall in love with the lyrics.

You are so talented to bring such normal things, normal relationships that no one seems to recognize into lyrics that touch so deeply.
I've never been in a relationship like in your songs, somehow I feel so relate with all of them.
The word you used, the way your stories are told is simply amazing.
I really appreciate you and hope to see you perform live one day.

With love and respect from a Thai fan ;)

@paigemissy790

Reminds me of me and my best friend
He had a crush on me since year 6 and he’s asked me out every year since then and at the time I only thought of him as a really good friend but now we are both 15 nearly 16 and he’s in a relationship and I now realises that all this time I was in love with him but I just didn’t know it yet.

It’s funny how things work out sometimes I never knew what i could of had until I lost it.😭💔

Anyone else had an experience like this??
