The Imagery here is that Jeremy Irons CEO character had the stomach for what they just did, never stops devouring his meal the whole time, will go home and sit on his tens of millions and not give a shit. While the Spacey character looks like he would vomit if he even tries to take a bite of food at that moment, clearly he didn't have the stomach for what they just did anymore. First, the preachers would do it to ask for offerings, to appease the God(s), and to help spread the word; thereby earning their living. Secondly, the rulers would do it to maintain control of the populace, and ensure their continued hold on their positions.

It makes you wonder: is the whole concept of 'conscience' merely a fabrication, by those who wish to control us through our ignorance?

I’m 64 and I assure you that until 15-20 years ago, this wasn’t possible. Anyone can open an account at Fidelity, with no minimum deposit, and buy fractional shares of any security, commission free. But most people just want to buy stuff, eat & drink, drink & smoke, watch things - basically, be entertained. That’s the problem - not the lack of knowledge or opportunity.

Keep him, he's getting promoted - extremely decisive and forward looking even under the intense pressure of reputational risk and realized losses, I imagine this is exactly the demeanor of someone like Jamie Dimon in the unfolding of the mortgage crisis (even though he was a relatively young CEO with less than 5 yrs on the job at the time), these are the qualities you genuinely need, there is emotion involved, it's just relative to your understanding of the world as Irons expresses here

The CEO's point of view is very interesting. He basically says that this is how the world's always worked. No matter what you do the crisis will happen again and again as it already happened a lot of times. If it's not him who does it it will be someone other. Nobody can change how the human nature works what the economy basically built on, and only because in this time it is them it just happened to, the world didn't become an uglier place than it was before. Nothing changed. All they can do is trying to stay alive. That's why the CEO doesn't feel like he is responsible for anything. This is a very hard question, because on the one hand he's right but on the other hand he isn't ...

But this is a fact that no matter how you appreciate your things your food in your warm home for the ones who are starving and suffering the poorness when they get in the same position as you they will waste their things the same as we do.

What triggered the collapse of 2008? It was all the defaults on mortgages, by people who should never have had them and who couldn’t afford what they bought. They wanted things they couldn’t afford to have, and when easy/cheap money (mortgages) were offered to them, they leapt at the opportunity. And it was the government that encouraged and enabled it. The greedy financial industry then jumped on board and exacerbated it, but it was the actual mortgage defaults that triggered the collapse.

The demeanor of Tuld might be repulsive to some. But in the world of international finance and banking, this mindset is essential to survival. It’s not just a business, it is war. And your firm is your nation, and your employees are your army. You hold allegiance to one ideal, the shareholders who have placed their trust and money in you. And as unfortunate as it sounds, there are employees in this scene that were let go after the day was done through no fault of their own. @Vijai Kumar Suriyababu But that was also not fault of investors. Who many actually lost money on the credit rating given to the mortgages and cdos. It was fault of the issuer (banks) and the credit agency choosing to favour their clients debt rating over being accurate.

So I stand by my point. The subprime crisis speaks more about banks and goverment than Wall Street conspiracies. Wall Street did not create neither the housing bubble nor did decide to lend a lot of mortgages to people that couldn't realistically pay them.

And let me tell you something else. Current FED policies+Biden promise of big deficit for infraestrcture will also probably create another bubble to burst. All that money that is being created and can't go to usual bonds due to low interest rates, will try to search profit somewhere else.

You're wrong though. The mortgages were given by banks. The fund managers just happened to own shares of said banks, and the crash happened when nobody wanted those banks, therefore making a financial crash. No Wall Street Investor actually managed mortgages.

Also, it's easy to blame the banks. But then again, people took them. It was a mutual risk. One was hoping said credit would make a profit, the other was hoping that lenient credit would give him a chance of owning a home.

It's human nature.

In the Matrix the oracle speaks of people coming to her not to choose what to do...but to understand a choice they have already made. That goes double for Spacey's character. BS. The dollar is backed by something greater than gold, greater the silver or gems or oil. It is backed by the simple fact that every American worker from the poorest to the richest, gets up every day and goes to work and generates more marginal value than he consumes, even if by a few cents. In other nations, the Social democracies of Europe for instance the workers consume as much or more marginal value than they generate. China is the only other nation besides us that can do that. But as long as Americans get up, go to work every morning and generate more marginal value per hour worked than they consume. We can borrow and trade on that excess marginal value. Gold is worthless except as a component in computer chips.

One thing about Sam Rogers (Spacey) is that he only cared about but what's good for the company. He's morally indifferent to having screwed over thousands of other shareholders, but was more worried about the fallout to the company's client relations. In the end he's more grieved about the passing of his dog than lives being ruined, likely even some suicides occurring from the collapse in MBS. What Tuld saying is true, and sadly it's true even today. We're in the midst of an unprecedented bond bubble NOW--stocks at all-time, unachievable highs. 3:19 Interesting speech. Less riveting & cynically profound than Arthur Jensen's (Ned Beatty) "corporate cosmology" speech from Network, but also a little more pragmatic. Instead of it being an evangelizing call to a sort of ecumenical capitalism, this exposition is simply an apologetic acquiescence to the baser nature of the world of finance.
He is wrong, though, when he says "there have always been and there always will be the same percentage of winners and losers ... the percentages-they stay exactly the same." The gross inequity of the wealth gap is widening exponentially all the time. We talk about the One Percenters, but pretty soon it will be only the top 1% of the One Percenters controlling the vast majority of the world's wealth. It is beyond monopolies: we are talking worldwide financial despotism.

People get all angry and communistic at scenes like this. They don't realize that in our own small ways, we are ALL Jeremy Irons' character. What difference is there when one hot dog vendor creates a way to drive his competitor a block down out of business to survive a downturn and a mutil billion dollar company driving its competitors out of business to survive a downturn? Nothing except scale. Business is business and the job of the CEO is to keep the company alive first before all things.

What they make or earn has nothing to do with what you - yes, YOU - make. What you earn is wholly dependent on what you do, what your value to society or a corporation is. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s all based on supply and demand. Why don’t teachers make more? Do you have any idea how many people graduate each year with education degrees? It’s many multiples of how many teachers are needed. Why is that? Because compared to being a doctor, or a computer scientist, or an engineer, an education degree is child’s play. Not picking on teachers, but that’s the one everyone always mentions. Supply and demand. That’s all it is.

The issue was the MBS getting out of hand for years , not the fire-sale. If i were in their shoes, would probably have done the same considering the knowledge that they had ahead of everyone and the circumstances regarding the financial security of everyone in that room going forward.

It all started in DC with the interest rates, then derivatives trading /ratings agencies creating an entirely separate market bound to collapse once people stopped paying mortgages they could not afford. Funds on Wall Street were just trading what was popping at the time, until it wasn't. People buying and selling should have done better research long before.

Sam is being kept around because the CEO likes him while the rest of his team is being torched now that their job is done and the company is safe. Sam takes great offense to this because his morality wasn't with his job or money, but with the skill of his team, and the work he's conducted over the years. Sam meets the CEO, and the CEO calms him down that his morality isn't as stake and too just take the money for the next 24 months. Basically a pragmatist vs an idealist.

I think it's showing the difference in the 2 characters. The other guy thinks it's all about saving your own skin, where as spacey character is trying to take the morale high ground that's it's about all of us .. it's deeper than that. But would take me to long to type.

Percentages Remains The Same is correct. The reason there are more Have's than Have Not's, per number, but not overall percentage, is due to the simple increase in overall human population.

Fair. Though also as cool and pragmatic as Jeremy Iron's character is in his justifications the audience isn't necessarily meant to agree with him. There's also a difference between genuine wealth creation through private ownership of the means of production (capitalism) and large institutions merely extracting an economic rent from their market position (Rent seeking behaviour).

I love those little artistic foreshadowing scenes in movies zero to do with the content or enjoyment of the movie, but so great for the ego of the writer and director , I am sure it only added $50 or $60,000 to the production cost

I still don't get why, and this is a recurring theme in the movie, letting people go helps them tie up the ends ("Yes Sam, no loose ends."). What kind of risks do they manage that way and how? Does this allow them activate a NDA that might be part a severance package?

No, it is just so when the traders in other banks get angry about the worthless trades they were sold by this company, they would be told: "the trader who sold you this product is no longer with the company", rather than that same trader spilling the beans and saying: "my bosses made me do it"

the percentages stay the same yes, in proportion to one another, so if there was 3% rich, there were 3% poor. Now theres 50% richer people, who got rich by making the other 50% poor, the money monster of capitalism
