Lady West
Jamie Scott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I had eyes in the back of my head
I would have told you that
You looked good
As I walked away

If you could've tried to trust the hand that fed
You would've never been hungry
But you never really be

The more of this or less of this or is there any difference
Or are we just holding onto the things we don't have anymore

Sometimes time doesn't heal
No not at all
Just stand still
While we fall
In or out of love again I doubt I'm gonna win you back
When you got eyes like that
It won't let me in
Always looking out

Lot of people spend their time just floating
We were victims together but lonely
You got hungry eyes that just can't look forward
Can't give them enough but we just can't start over
Building with bent nails we're
Falling but holding, I don't wanna take up anymore of your time
Time time time

Sometimes time doesn't heal
No not all
Just stand still
While we fall
In or out of love again I doubt I'm gonna win you back
When you got eyes like that
It won't let me in

Always looking out
Always lookin

Overall Meaning

The Jamie Scott song "Lady West" is a contemplative rumination on the difficulties of moving on after a relationship has ended. The opening lines express regret that the singer couldn't communicate their appreciation for their former partner in the moment of parting, wishing they had eyes in the back of their head to see how good they looked. Later, the singer considers the possibility that trust issues may have contributed to the relationship's demise, musing that if their partner had been able to trust them, they "would've never been hungry." But ultimately, the song seems resigned to the idea that some things cannot be fixed, that the loss of a relationship causes a kind of permanent damage. "Sometimes time doesn't heal," the chorus repeats, "Just stand still / while we fall / in or out of love again."

The imagery of the song evokes a sense of hopelessness and futility. The singer and their partner were "victims together but lonely," unable to bridge the gap between them. The metaphor of "building with bent nails" suggests that the foundation of their relationship was always flawed, always doomed to fail. The repeated refrain of "always looking out" creates a sense that the partner is guarded and closed off, unable to let the singer in. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer acknowledging that they're unlikely to win their partner back, but still haunted by their memories and unable to fully move on.

It's great isn't it?  Great piece of real music where you can nicely pick out all the instruments.   Seems like the whole band had fun with this one.   The song grabbed me right away when I first heard it in the movie 27 Dresses.
