Wayfaring Stranger
Jamie Woon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world alone
There's no sickness, toil or danger
In that bright land to which I go
I'm going there to see my mother
I'm going there no more to roam
I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

I know dark clouds will gather around me
I know my way is rough and steep
But beautiful fields lie just beyond me
Where souls redeem the vigils keep
I'm going there to see my father
I'm going there no more to roam
I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

I want to wear a crown of glory
When I get home to that bright land
And I want to shout down Satan's story
In concert with that bloodwashed band
I'm going there to see my brothers
I said they need me when I come

I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jamie Woon's version of Wayfaring Stranger speak of a spiritual journey, of the desire to reach a brighter, better place where there is no suffering or danger. The first verse emphasizes the loneliness of the journey, with the singer feeling like a "poor wayfaring stranger", or a person wandering aimlessly through life. They describe their destination as a bright land that they are going to, not to roam anymore but to see their mother. The use of "over Jordan" can be interpreted in two ways - as a reference to the biblical crossing of the river Jordan, which symbolizes passing from one world to another, or as a metaphor for any obstacle that must be crossed before reaching a goal.

The second verse delves deeper into the challenges that the singer anticipates on their journey, acknowledging that dark clouds will gather and the way will be rough and steep. But there is hope beyond the clouds - beautiful fields and a place where souls are redeemed. The singer reveals that they are going to see their father and their brothers, indicating a longing to reunite with loved ones who have passed away. The third verse speaks of the singer's desire to wear a crown of glory and to join a "bloodwashed band" in shouting down Satan's story, possibly referencing a Christian belief in the struggle between good and evil.

Overall, the lyrics of Wayfaring Stranger convey a sense of longing for a better existence beyond this world, and an assurance that those who have passed away are waiting for us there. The use of religious imagery and language emphasizes the theme of spiritual transcendence and suggests that the journey is not just a physical one, but a deeply personal one as well.
