Holy
Jamila Woods Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Give me today my daily bread
Help me to walk alone ahead
Though I walk through the darkest valley I will fear no love
Oh my smile my mind reassure me I don't need no one

Woke up this morning with my mind set on loving me
With my mind set on loving me
Woke up this morning with my mind set on loving me
With my mind set on loving me

I'm not lonely, I'm alone
And I'm holy by my own
I'm not lonely, I'm alone
And I'm holy by my own

Yeah, the bad days may come
The lover may leave
The winter may not
Hey, the map of your palms
The temple you be
You're all that you got (say "Amen")

Yeah, the bad days may come (to yourself)
The lover may leave
The winter may not (say "Amen")
Hey, the map of your palms (to yourself)
The temple you be
You're all that you got (say "Amen")

Though I walk through the darkest valley I will fear no love (say "Amen" to yourself)
Oh my smile my mind reassure me I don't need no one (say "Amen" to yourself)

Woke up this morning with my mind set on loving me
With my mind set on loving me
Woke up this morning with my mind set on loving me
With my mind set on loving me

I'm not lonely, I'm alone
And I'm holy by my own
I'm not lonely, I'm alone
And I'm holy by my own

My cup is full up, what I got is enough
Nobody completes me, don't mess with my stuff
My cup is full up, what I got is enough
Nobody completes me, don't mess with my love
Surely, surely, surely, surely goodness and mercy
Shall follow me

Shall follow me
Shall follow me

Overall Meaning

In Jamila Woods’s song “Holy,” the artist emphasizes the importance of self-love and being content with oneself. In the first verse, Woods asks for her daily bread and for the strength to walk alone ahead. She acknowledges that there may be difficult times, but promises to not be afraid of love. She reassures herself that she does not need anyone else to feel validated and secured. In the chorus, she repeats the phrase “I’m not lonely, I’m alone,” emphasizing that she is at peace with being alone and being her own source of holy light.

The second verse highlights the reality of life: bad days come, people leave, and circumstances may not always be favorable. However, Woods acknowledges that the only person she truly has is herself. The repetition of the phrase “you’re all that you got” emphasizes this point. By the end of the song, Woods’s cup is full, and she has realized that she does not need anyone else to complete her - she is enough on her own. The final lines of the song are a reference to Psalm 23:6, “Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” The song ends on this note of hope and assurance, that even in the darkest moments, we can find peace and contentment within ourselves.

My interpretation of the song is that she is loving herself and taking care of herself physically, spiritually, and mentally. She is not walking through life feeling lonely although she is not in a relationship. She is not expecting a man to complete her. She is whole. She wants a man who is whole and who will compliment her when the time comes for that.
