Do you know where you're coming from ?
Jamiroquai Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh do you know where you're coming from?
Hey nothing is as clear!
Imagine in your mind oasis.
Far awide beyond our living.
Sure enough I'm tired out trying
Hang on when this world is spinning
I was left out
There was no light
There was no sound
Here in the dark
Fishin' Around For Meaning
But I had to ask
Someone I knew
Not so far away from where I was
She said
Hey! Do you know (mmm)
Where you're comin' from?
Hey! Do you know
Now where you're going to?
She said
Hey! Have you been
Somewhere you've never ever been before?
I said well
Nothing is as clear!
Nothing is as clear without
Holding Hand to gently guide you.
Once that disapeared
But it's so close now that I'm here beside you.
I was left down
There was no light
There was no sound
Here in the dark
Fishing around for meaning
I had to ask someone I knew
Not so far away from where I was
She said
Hey! Do you know
Where you're comin' from?
Hey! Do you know
Now where you're going to?
She said
Hey! Have you been
Somewhere you've never been before?
Now nothing is as clear
Ah!
Oh, do you know,
Now where you're going to?
She said
Hey, do you know now where you're coming from?
Hey, have you been somewhere you've never ever been before?
Nothing is as clear!
I was left down
I was left down
I was left down

Imagine in your mind, oasis.
Far awide beyond our living.
Sure enough I'm tired out trying to
Hang on when this world is spinning
I was left out
There was no light
There was no sound
Here in the dark
Fishin' Around For Meaning
But, I had to ask
Someone I knew
Not so far away from where I was
She said
Oh! Do you know
Where you're comin' from?
Hey! Do you know
Where you're going to?
Hey! Have you been

Somewhere you've never been before?
Oh, now nothing can ever be as clear.

Overall Meaning

In "Do you know where you're coming from?", Jamiroquai questions the listener about their sense of self-awareness and purpose in life. The opening lyric "Oh, do you know where you're coming from?" suggests a feeling of confusion or lack of direction, while the line "Nothing is as clear" emphasizes the uncertainty and complexity of the human experience. The use of the word "oasis" creates a vivid image of a far-off and unattainable paradise, highlighting the difficulty of finding meaning in life.

The repetition of the line "I was left out" emphasizes a sense of isolation and loneliness, which is further reinforced by the image of being in the dark and fishing around for meaning. The character's desperation is palpable in lines such as "Sure enough, I'm tired out trying" and "But I had to ask someone I knew", indicating a desire for human connection and guidance. The plea for clarity is repeated throughout the song, showing that the search for meaning is a never-ending process.

Overall, "Do you know where you're coming from?" captures the universal human experience of feeling lost and searching for meaning, while also suggesting that the journey towards self-awareness and understanding is worthwhile and necessary.

I had no idea there was a video for this! I have loved this song for 25 years. In America this track is buried at the end of "Traveling Without Moving" as a hidden track. It's my favorite song on that album.

Jay Kay makes me laugh. He's an excellent performer

Same, I didn’t know there was a video for this song until many years later when YouTube first started. They get the best music and artists over there in the UK and keep it all to themselves, (Goldie, LTJ Bukem , etc.). I had to search for stuff like this in CD/ record shops all over Maryland and D.C. back in ‘96-2003. Luckily I caught my first experience and listen to Jamiroquai on BET, around this time when they used to actually showcase real music and artists. It was their “Return of the Space Cowboy “ video playing and I was hooked from then on , bought every LP and single I could get my hands on by them and never looked back.🤗
