Little Deuce Coupe
Jan & Dean Lyrics

Little deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got
Little deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got

Well I'm not braggin' babe so don't put me down
But I've got the fastest set of wheels in town
When something comes up to me he don't even try
Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a Thunderbird like (she's) it's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that ain't enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy

And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears

She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jan & Dean's song Little Deuce Coupe tell the story of the singer's pride and joy: his little deuce coupe, a car with a flat head mill that can walk a Thunderbird like it's standing still. He goes on to describe the car's various features, including its competition clutch, four on the floor, and loud lake pipes, that make it a force to be reckoned with on the streets. The singer boasts that his car is the fastest set of wheels in town, and he often leaves other cars in the dust when the light turns green.

The song is an ode to the car culture of the 1950s and 1960s, when young people were obsessed with automobiles and the freedom they represented. It celebrates the thrill of driving fast and the feeling of power that comes from having a hot rod that can outrun the competition.

One interesting aspect of the song is that it was actually written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, who produced and sang on the track. Wilson was inspired to write the song after seeing a hot rod race on the Pacific Coast Highway in California. The song became an instant classic and helped to cement the Beach Boys as one of the most beloved and influential bands of the era.

I had both versions of this song when they came out in the early 60's. The Beach Boys were a favorite band of mine and I loved the surfer sound and west coast bands of that time. That said, the more unpolished sound of the Jan and Dean version wins. It reminds me of the local bands playing at dances and such in the junior high on Friday nights. And the garage bands which were every where in the 60's.

I love this version, it has a slight hint of sarcasm on Jans lead!

Chuck Stauber

Definitely Jan and Dean, with Glen Campbell's guitar riffs at the end.

Bon Scott
