Jordan
Jana Horn Lyrics

The greatest bomb is coming to sort out the unclean
And if you go to Jordan, you′ll face your enemies
But if you don't, you won′t have more than your mother's grief
And when you go to Jordan, don't stop for anything
When she asks you if you′re thirsty, and you are, don′t have a drink
It's not your task to understand the power of your feet
So I, to Jordan, with nobody in tow
Do walk the day into the end of its shadow
With a mind to quiet the questions that I keep
Like a baby in the womb rocks its mother into sleep
And the road's so long, I do not know my name
By the time my body falls flat at Jordan′s gate
And I cry, "Brother, sister, Mary Full of Grace
Please tell me what I've done to have been pulled up from my place"
And the gate unlocks and there before me stands
A man who is so dark, he has black bullets in his hands
And he says, "Friend, my friend, do you remember me?"
And I said, "You must be mistaken, sir, I came from Galilee"
"Why, yes, I know, and you have served me well
You have found the gates of Jordan despite every kind of hell
Now, please, you must take this burden off of me
I will blow my trumpet, boy, and you′ll bomb Galilee"
"But, sir, I can't, that is my family
They are just as dark and troubled and burdened by belief
I can't be cut off from the shadow that was cast by my own feet
To thank God for his calling at the cost of Galilee"
Then he grabbed my arm, said, "Take this trumpet here
You can play your town a song while I take them by the ear
This is the way of things you simply do not understand
And I can only show you grace, dear boy, if you will take my hand"
So there I laid my body to rest
Having reached the gates of Jordan for the journey in itself
I cannot want to wander any longer through this hell
To be left for dead in Jordan and be called Emmanuel
The lyrics of Jana Horn's song Jordan tell a story of a person who is summoned to Jordan by a group of people. They are told that a bomb is coming to the town to "sort out the unclean" and that if they go to Jordan, they will face their enemies. However, if they do not go, they will have nothing more than their mother's grief. The person sets out on their journey to Jordan, with a desire to quiet the questions that they keep in their mind. The road to Jordan is so long, that they do not even know their own name. But when they reach Jordan's gate, they are confronted by a man who is so dark that he has black bullets in his hands. He claims that the person who journeyed to Jordan has served him well and that now they must take a burden from him. The man wants the person to blow his trumpet and "bomb Galilee." However, the person refuses, saying that they cannot leave their family behind to be destroyed by the bomb. The man insists, and eventually, the person takes the trumpet so that they can play a song for their town while the man takes control of them.
The song, Jordan, is a powerful and thought-provoking piece of music. It conveys a deep sense of struggle, both in the physical sense - the arduous journey to Jordan - and the emotional sense - the struggle between loyalty to one's family and loyalty to an abstract idea of duty. The imagery in the song is rich and evocative, painting a landscape that is both beautiful and bleak. The song touches on themes such as power, sacrifice, and the weight of responsibility, making it a poignant and moving work.

I think this is fascinating, strange and inspiring storytelling set to odd and unsettling music. I've been thinking about it non-stop since I heard it first.
@TheSlowMusicMovement
The unostentatious instrumentation is in no rush to reveal its quality & subtle depths, & graciously allows all ears to focus on Horn's softly sung vocals, as she tells refined tales of everyday & beyond with an easiness that invites immediate attention & an eloquent charm that encourages you to stay. An important reissue by No Quarter for a voice that deserves a wider audience.

We already have a Billie illish. This Isn’t music. It’s poetry with a beat. Terrible.

I was so thankful to find this album today. The story in Jordan is engaging and I love the way it is told with such beautiful harmonies coupled with eerie synthesized dissonance. Like the video, it is starkly bare and not overwrought. Very nicely done!

Why has this had so few views? Powerfully understated, elliptical, and brilliant.
