In Jane Lui's song Firefly, the singer is in need of comfort and safety. She seeks refuge from the cold and turns to a man whose eyes show the experience of a warrior. Despite the man's strength, the singer still feels the bitter chill of the winter that stabs like a thorn. However, the singer is not seeking just a physical warmth and safety. She is also in need of emotional tranquillity. The man is holding her ransom, and she wants him to fight her. This can be understood as a metaphor for her desire to be a partner in a relationship, not a captive. She does not wish to be held back or stagnant; she wants to grow.
The lyrics also reference the theme of time. The singer acknowledges that it takes time to become someone that we never knew existed inside of us. She reassures the listener that in time, the pain and fear will disappear, and we will find our way to safety. It will take time and patience, but as long as we keep moving forward, we will eventually find the light that the fireflies bring. The use of fireflies in the metaphor may symbolize hope and courage. Despite their small size, fireflies hold light and are incredibly resilient creatures.
