True Love
Jane Powell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I give to you and you give to me
True love, true love.
So, on and on it will always be
True love, true love.
For you and I have a guardian angel on high
With nothing to do but to
Give to you and you give to me
Love forever true.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jane Powell's song True Love revolve around the idea of mutual, eternal love. The line "I give to you and you give to me" emphasizes the importance of reciprocity in a relationship. The repetition of "True love, true love" underscores the depth and sincerity of this emotion. The subsequent line "So, on and on it will always be" reinforces the idea that love is infinite and enduring, something that transcends time and space.

The final two lines of the song allude to a guardian angel watching over the couple, thereby highlighting the spiritual dimension to their bond. The idea that this angel has "nothing to do but to give" to them reinforces the idea that their love is pure and selfless. This recurring theme of giving and receiving is what makes their love "forever true."

I can't believe this was the lesser-selling version of the song! Jane Powell's voice is smooth as silk

@sstavsky

Well, Jane's version was essentially a cover version, since the Bing and Grace version was the original. Also, the duet between Bing and Grace was lovely, although Grace only comes in near the end of the record. (Wish there was more of her on that recording!)
