Every Time
Janet Jackson Lyrics

Da-da, di-da, do-ah
Di-da, ooh-ahh
Do-do-do-do-do, da-da-da-da-da-da

I'm afraid I'm starting to feel
What I said I would not do
The last time really hurt me
I'm scared to fall in love
Afraid to love so fast
'Cause every time I fall in love
It seems to never last

But every time your love is near
And every time I'm filled with fear
'Cause every time I see your face
My heart does begin to race every time

One half wants me to go
One half wants me to stay
I just get so all confused

I'm scared to fall in love
Afraid to love so fast
'Cause every time I fall in love
It seems to never last

But every time your love is near
And every time I'm filled with fear
'Cause every time, ahh
My heart does begin to race every time

Da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da

I'm scared to fall in love
Afraid to love so fast
'Cause every time I fall in love
It seems to never last

But every time your love is near
And every time I'm filled with fear
'Cause every time I see your face
My heart does begin to race every time

It's every time, it's every time 'cause

Every time your love is near
And every time I'm filled with fear
'Cause every time I see your face
Could it be that this will be the one that lasts?
The fear does start to erase every time
Oh, could it be that this will be the one that lasts?

For all my times

Ooh, yeah
For all my times

Overall Meaning

Janet Jackson's "Every Time" is a soulful ballad about the fear and apprehension that comes with falling in love. Jackson sings about being hesitant to love after being hurt in the past, and how every time she falls in love, it never seems to last. She expresses the confusion of being torn between wanting to stay and wanting to leave, and how every time she sees the face of the person she loves, her heart races with fear and hope. The lyrics suggest that the fear of being hurt again is very real, but every time the person's love is near, the fear starts to lessen.

The song's overall message is relatable to anyone who has experienced heartbreak or has been hesitant to fall in love due to past experiences. The lyrics are very expressive and emotional, with Jackson's powerful vocals adding depth and intensity to the message. The repetition of the chorus "every time" highlights the cyclical nature of the theme and the way in which past experiences can inhibit one's ability to embrace new relationships. The final verse suggests a glimmer of hope that this time, love might last, and the fear might start to dissipate.

In the 90s, most ballads and songs of this style were about love stories and breakups, "Everytime" is an exception and is a song about a insecure person about their relationships, it's about insecurity and feeling insufficient. The Velvet Rope is a musical masterpiece!

Such a rare beauty. People didn’t give her credit as a singer but in a sea of belters, she sang soft and sultry. Stuck to who she was
