You Belong To Me
Janet Seidel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Watch the sun sets on a tropic isle
But remember, darling, all the while
You belong to me
See the market place in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
But remember when a dream appears
I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too... and blue
Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Bit remember 'till you're home again
You belong to me
The lyrics of Janet Seidel's song You Belong to Me are about a lover who is traveling the world and experiencing different adventures. The singer encourages their loved one to explore and enjoy their travels but also reminds them that no matter where they go, they belong to the singer. This reinforces the bond between them and the idea that their love is stronger than physical distance. The lyrics convey a sense of longing for their loved one and the fear of being separated from them, which is evident in the line “I’ll be so alone without you, Maybe you’ll be lonesome too... and blue”.
The lyrics also emphasize the importance of memories and mementos in maintaining the connection between the lovers. The singer asks their loved one to send them photographs and souvenirs as a way of keeping their memories alive. The imagery of the pyramids along the Nile, the market place in old Algiers, and the jungle when it’s wet with rain, creates a sense of wanderlust and adventure, but also reinforces the ideas of exoticism and otherness that were prevalent in the time period in which the song was written.
