Always Have Always Will
Janie Frickie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems funny I remember your number
After all this time
And I know that it's late
And I hope that I'm not out o' line

But for some crazy reason
I bin thinkin' 'bout you all day
And every three hours now
I been thinkin' of somethin' to say I

love you like a fool
Always have, always will
But you know that it's just my point of view
But I love you still
Always have, always will
Always have, always will love you

Well now, are you sleepin' any better
Now that I'm gone
And I wanna know who's holdin' you tight
Or are you just holdin' on

You're awfully quiet, I guess you're tired
So I'll hang up the phone
But you know that this ol' heart
Can't leave well enough alone

I love you like a fool
Always have, always will
But you know, yes you know that it's just my point of view
But I, I love you still

Always have, always will
Always have, always will love you

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Janie Frickie’s song, “Always Have Always Will,” set the tone for the emotional content of the rest of the lyrics. The singer is hesitant but cannot resist the urge to call an old love interest. Although they may have parted ways at some point, the singer has continued to think about the person and has even remembered their phone number. While it may seem odd that the singer is calling at an unusual hour, there is an undeniable yearning that is conveyed through the lyrics.

As the conversation unfolds, the tender emotions are revealed. The singer expresses love for the person on the other end of the line, and not just for the present moment, but always. Despite the possibility that their feelings may not be reciprocated, the singer cannot help but share their point of view. There is a sense of vulnerability in the lyrics, as the singer lays their heart on the line. They acknowledge that their perspective may not be the same as the other person’s, but the love that they feel is undeniable.

The remainder of the song explores further longing and questioning. The singer wants to know if the other person is doing well, if they are sleeping and if there is someone new in their life. There is a sense of sadness in the lyrics, as the singer hints that they may already know the answers to these questions. However, the deep love that is expressed remains constant despite any heartache or distance.

Real talent!!! Blows away any of them present day.

What's interesting about this song is that not only is it traditional for its time period, but even more so in its production style. Most albums from the era, quality and manufactured (and even other Janie Fricke albums), are plagued with thin sounding reverb and electronic instruments. This single was almost, by the sounds of it, voluntarily not carried out as such. Simply timeless and beautiful.

A #1 hit for Janie Fricke on the Country & Western charts. It was the 824th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. On February 21, 1987, I was supposed to see Janie perform at The Scope in Norfolk, VA. She and Gary Morris were to open for The Charlie Daniels Band, but weather issues forced Janie to miss the performance. Though I didn't attend, she did come to the Hampton Coliseum the following June with Kathy Mattea opening.
