Piece Of My Heart
Janis Joplin/Janis Joplin & Her Kozmic Blues Band Lyrics

Oh, come on, come on, come on, come on

Didn't I make you feel like you were the only man? Yeah
And didn't I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can?
Honey, you know I did
And each time I tell myself that I, well I think I've had enough
But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough
I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby (whoa, break it)
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah, yeah, yeah (whoa, have a)
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby
You know you got it if it makes you feel good
Oh, yes indeed

You're out on the streets looking good
And baby, deep down in your heart, I guess you know that it ain't right
Never, never, never, never, never, never hear me when I cry at night
Babe, and I cry all the time
But each time I tell myself that I, well I can't stand the pain
But when you hold me in your arms, I'll sing it once again

I said come on, come on, come on, come on and take it
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby
Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby
Well, you know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good

I need you to come on, come on, come on, come on and take it
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby (whoa, break it)
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, c'mon now (whoa, have a)
Have another little piece of my heart now, baby
You know you got it, whoa

Take it
Take another little piece of my heart now, baby (whoa, break it)
Break another little bit of my heart, now darling, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (whoa, have a)

Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, hey
You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good

Overall Meaning

"Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin is a song about a woman who has given everything she can to make her man happy, but is not receiving the love and respect she deserves in return. She pleads with him to take another piece of her heart, despite the pain he inflicts upon her. Janis' powerful and soulful delivery brings to life the intense feelings of love, heartbreak, and resilience in the song's lyrics.

The opening lines, "Didn't I make you feel like you were the only man? Yeah / And didn't I give you nearly everything that a woman possibly can?" represent the woman's frustration that her love and devotion are not being reciprocated. However, she is determined to show her strength and resilience, declaring "But I'm gonna show you, baby, that a woman can be tough." The repetition of the refrain, "Come on, come on, come on, come on and take it," emphasizes her willingness to continue giving, in spite of the pain.

The chorus, with its repeated call to "take another little piece of my heart now, baby," showcases the vulnerability and tenderness of the woman's love, despite the hurt she is experiencing. The final lines, "You know you got it, child, if it makes you feel good," suggest that the woman is willing to give up everything for the sake of love and the happiness of her partner.

>"this is a new music project by NATU (Natalia Przybysz) named KOZMIC BLUES and their own version of "Piece of my heart" originally performed by Janis Joplin."

The song was not "originally performed by Janis Joplin." The song was written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns. It was not written for a specific person. Aretha Franklin's sister, Erma Franklin was the first to record the song. Next, was Janis Joplin; also in the same year as Janis was Dusty Springfield's rendition.
In order of release:

Erma Franklin's version was released in October 1967
Janis's version was released in August 1968 (10 months later)
Dusty's version was released November 22nd, 1968 (3 months later than Janis), as track #2 on her album "Dusty... Definitely" released in the United Kingdom. John Paul Jones of the newly formed Led Zepplin was the musical arranger & orchestra conductor (and played bass on the album).

Since these three renditions are different, it is OK to reference a specific rendition, but with respect to the writers, always give credit to them. Otherwise, we wouldn't have the song at all.
