Little Girl Blue
Janis Joplin ( Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sit there, hmm, count your fingers.
What else, what else is there to do ?
Oh and I know how you feel,
I know you feel that you're through.
Oh wah wah ah sit there, hmm, count,
Ah, count your little fingers,
My unhappy oh little girl, little girl blue, yeah.
Oh sit there, oh count those raindrops
Oh, feel 'em falling down, oh honey all around you.
Honey don't you know it's time,
I feel it's time,
Somebody told you 'cause you got to know
That all you ever gonna have to count on
Or gonna want to lean on
It's gonna feel just like those raindrops do
When they're falling down, honey, all around you.
Oh, I know you're unhappy.

Oh sit there, ah go on, go on
And count your fingers.
I don't know what else, what else
Honey have you got to do.
And I know how you feel,
And I know you ain't got no reason to go on
And I know you feel that you must be through.
Oh honey, go on and sit right back down,
I want you to count, oh count your fingers,
Ah my unhappy, my unlucky
And my little, oh, girl blue.
I know you're unhappy,

Ooh ah, honey I know,
Baby I know just how you feel.

Overall Meaning

The song "Little Girl Blue" by Janis Joplin (w/The Kozmic Blues Band) seems to be a conversation between two people - one who is trying to console and empower the other. The first line, "Sit there, hmm, count your fingers," is an indication that the person being addressed is feeling lost and without direction. The next line, "What else, what else is there to do?" reinforces this feeling of aimlessness. The person speaking, however, understands how the other is feeling, and offers words of empathy: "Oh and I know how you feel, I know you feel that you're through."

The next few lines suggest that the person being addressed is on the verge of giving up, with the singer telling them that they're not alone in their struggles. The repetition of "count" and "little fingers" gives the impression of something small and insignificant, which emphasizes the sadness and hopelessness the person is feeling. The second verse continues this theme, with the metaphor of raindrops falling all around the person. The singer tells them that they need to realize that the only thing they can rely on is themselves, and that they need to learn to weather the storm.

The entire song seems to be a bittersweet combination of sympathy and tough love, with the singer acknowledging the pain and hopelessness the other person is feeling, while also reminding them that they have the strength within themselves to keep going.

It's like in this song she's talking to her younger self. Makes me cry and I'm a man.

I remember listening to this song in college about the time it came out. I knew I was gay & wondered where my life was gonna take me. She spoke to me! There's a couple of places in the song where her voice is indescribably lovely. Bravo.
