Only One
Jann Arden Lyrics

If I can last my fate on this earth
I?ll be baptized, I?ll pray to them all
I?ll lay down in the water
And drown away my faults
Will you think of me then
When you're all alone?
And throwing her a bone
Will you wish it was me
Lying in your bed
Wrapped around the covers
Underneath your breath?
Only one, only one
I ever loved, ever loved
The only one, only one I ever loved
I'm closing my eyes
I'm biting my tongue
I'm really starting to wonder
Where this heartache came from
I'm lying on the tracks
I'm hearing the train
I'm praying that the
Holy Ghost will save me again
Only one, only one
I ever loved, ever loved
The only one, only one I ever loved
If I come back, if I find you there
I'm calling on my daddy and he?ll kill you, I swear
He?ll leave you in parts all over the ground
Then there you will stay never to be found
Only one, only one
I ever loved, ever loved
The only one, only one I ever loved
Only one, only one
I ever loved, ever loved
The only one, only one I ever loved
The only one, only one
Was I enough? No
In this song, Jann Arden seems to be reflecting on a past love, questioning whether this person will still think of her when they're alone or with someone new. She imagines returning and being baptized, drowning away her faults and wondering if her former lover will wish it was her lying in their bed. The chorus repeats the title of the song, emphasizing that this person was the only one she ever loved.
As the song continues, Arden becomes more introspective, wondering where the heartache came from and feeling overwhelmed to the point of imagining lying on train tracks and hoping for salvation from the Holy Ghost. The final verse takes a darker turn, with Arden imagining her revenge on her past love, calling on her father to kill them and leave their body in pieces on the ground.
This song highlights the pain and longing that can come from past relationships, as well as the darker thoughts and fantasies that can sometimes accompany those feelings. Arden's lyrics are honest and raw, and the slow, mournful melody conveys the sense of loss and regret she is expressing.
