These are the things i can do without
Come on, I'm talking to you, come on
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really really ought to know
Those one track minds
That took you for a working boy
Kiss them, goodbye
You shouldn't have to jump for joy
You shouldn't have to jump for joy
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
They gave you life
And in return you gave them hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale
I hope we live to tell the tale
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
And when you've taken down your guard
If i could change your mind
I'd really love to break your heart
I'd really love to break your heart
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things i can do without
Come on, i'm talking to you, come on
The lyrics of Jarle Bernhoft's song, Shout, present a strong message that touches on themes of oppression and resistance. The opening line repeats the word "shout" as if to encourage the listener to speak out and stand up for themselves. The repetition of the phrase, "These are the things I can do without" suggests that the singer is tired of whatever oppressive system is in place and is ready for change.
The second verse speaks of "violent times" and selling one's soul, implying that in our society, sometimes we are expected to compromise ourselves to get ahead. The reference to "black and white," suggests that these issues are systemic and that the people in power should know better. The line, "You shouldn't have to jump for joy," highlights the fact that people should not have to celebrate basic human rights.
The third verse speaks to the idea of rebellion, the listener is encouraged to "shout" and to "give them hell." The line, "As cold as ice, I hope we live to tell the tale," suggests that the fight for change will not be easy and that the singer hopes that they will see the day when things have changed. The final verse is a bit of a twist, it contradicts the prior verses by admitting that the singer would like to break someone's heart. This could be interpreted in several ways, but perhaps it suggests that the singer is tired of being oppressed and would rather be the one asserting power over someone else for once.

Sometimes at a show you have an amazing performance and there are times where you're not too sure how it's going to turn out...but then it's like some extra force is just taking you to the best you can possibly be and when you finish even you're surprised at how amazing it turned out to be. That's what I just got reminded of when I saw him throw up his arms at the end. Love it.
