Wörk
Jars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just in case
I will leave my things packed
So I can run away
I cannot trust these voices
I don't have a line of prospects
That can give some kind of peace
There is nothing left to cling to
That can bring me sweet release
I have no fear of drowning
It's the breathing
That's taking all this work
Do you know what I mean
When I say I don't wanna be alone?
What I mean when I say
I don't wanna be alone?
Empty spaces
Shadows hit by streetlights
With warning signs and weight
Of tired conversations
In the absence of a shoulder
In the abscess of a thief
On the brink of this destruction
On the eve of bittersweet
Now all the demons look like prophets
And I'm living out
Every word they speak
Every word they speak
Do you know what I mean
When I say I don't wanna be alone?
What I mean when I say
I don't wanna be alone?
What I mean when I say
I don't wanna be alone?
Do you know what I mean
When I say I don't wanna be alone?
What I mean when I say
I don't wanna be alone?
What I mean when I say
I don't wanna be alone?
Alone, alone
I don't wanna be alone
I have no fear of drowning

It's the breathing
It's taking all this work

Overall Meaning

The song "Work" by Jars of Clay is about a person who is struggling with their own mental health and trying to find a way to cope with it. The lyrics reveal how helpless the person feels, admitting that they don't have a line of prospects to give them peace, and that they have nothing to cling to for sweet release. They cannot trust their own voices and feel like all their efforts to keep up with the world are taking so much work. The singer reveals that they are not afraid of drowning, but of the breathing, which shows that they are willing to escape from this tiring life but unsure of how. The verse "Now all the demons look like prophets And I'm living out Every word they speak" means that the singer doesn't have anyone to lean on, and the negative thoughts that they have been dwelling on are slowly taking over their life. The chorus of the song repeatedly asks if anyone understands what they mean when they say they don't want to be alone, emphasizing the isolation that they feel.

Totally agree...

I am not even Christian but I appreciate this band's ability to reach beyond religious borders.

@Cyberweasel89

Looking into them, I get the sense that they're genuine about their art and care about the effect faith and music has on other people. Their music isn't about preaching from a place of superiority. It comes from caring about others and reaching out via their own feelings and experiences. I'm not Christian, but I can truly appreciate that.

I hope you seek the Lord and find Him. If you seek Him with all your heart you will find Him.

Matthew 7:7-8
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

@HarmonicWave

I'm actually listening through all their albums. I listened to Work the other day and remembered that the music video was really cool so I came here looking for it.
