Pulp disbanded in 2002 (although they have reformed on a number occasions since), but Cocker has been busy. In 2003, he re-emerged to promote a new album A Heavy Nite With... for his new band, Relaxed Muscle. 2005 then brought Cocker briefly back into the limelight with his contribution to the soundtrack for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He also collaborated with and wrote lyrics for Nancy Sinatra's and Charlotte Gainsbourg's comeback albums.
Cocker embarked on a solo career under his own name with an album entitled Jarvis (2006). His sophomore effort Further Complications (produced by Steve Albini) was released in 2009.
Cocker released an album called Room 29 (2017) with Chilly Gonzales and then started a new band called Jarv is..., with which he released the critically acclaimed and very successful album Beyond the Pale (2020).
2021 saw the release of Chansons d'Ennui Tip-Top, which served as a companion release to the soundtrack for Wes Anderson's 2021 film, The French Dispatch. Cocker sang the songs in film character, the name of this character being Tip-Top, which explains why the album is sometimes simply referred to as Chansons d'Ennui, formally credited to Tip-Top.
More film music followed in 2022, as Cocker recorded the original soundtrack to the film This Is Going To Hurt. This where it gets complicated: the band name Jarv is... can be spotted on the artwork of This Is Going To Hurt (Original Soundtrack), but the score is listed on streaming platforms such as Spotify under Jarvis Cocker. As a matter of fact, the band name Jarv is... seems to have been dropped altogether, as all Jarv is... albums are now also listed under Jarvis Cocker.
Running The World

Those most deserving will end up with the most
That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top
Well I say, "Shit floats"
If you thought things had changed
Friend, you'd better think again
Bluntly put, in the fewest of words
Cunts are still running the world
Oh yeah
Now the working classes are obsolete
They are surplus to society's needs
So let 'em all kill each other
And get it made overseas
That's the word, don't you know
From the guys that's running the show
Let's be perfectly clear boys and girls
Oh cunts are still running the world
Cunts are still running the world
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Feed your children on crayfish and lobster tails
Find a school near the top of the league
In theory I respect your right to exist
I will kill you if you move in next to me
And it stinks, yeah it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
But the takings are up by a third, so
Cunts are still running the world, yeah
Cunts are still running the world
Oh yeah
Cunts are still running the world
Cunts are still running the world
The free market is perfectly natural
Do you think that I'm some kind of dummy?
It's the ideal way to order the world
"Fuck the morals, does it make any money?"
If you don't like it, then leave
Or use your right to protest on the street
Yeah use your right, but don't imagine that it's heard
Not while cunts are still running the world
Cunts are still running the world, yeah
Cunts are still running the world, yeah
Cunts are still running the world, oh
Cunts are still running the world
Cunts are still running the world
Cunts are still running the world
Jarvis Cocker's "Running the World" is a scathing commentary on the state of the world in the early 2000s. The first verse sets the tone for the song, with Cocker expressing his disdain for the idea of a "natural order" in which the most deserving individuals receive the most wealth and power. He rejects this notion, saying "Shit floats," implying that those who may not be deserving of success can still achieve it.
The chorus of the song, "Cunts are still running the world," is a blunt statement that highlights Cocker's frustration with the political and economic elite who he believes are responsible for the world's problems. He criticizes the system that perpetuates their power and wealth, claiming that the working classes are deemed obsolete in their eyes and left to fend for themselves. Cocker sings that their power lies in their ability to "get it made overseas," basically meaning that they take advantage of foreign workers to produce their goods at a lower cost.
In the second verse, Cocker exaggerates the lengths to which the wealthy will go to secure their social status. He sings about how they will feed their children crayfish and lobster tails and only send them to top-ranking schools, all while despising and shunning those who are not part of their social circle. This elitism he describes is contrasted with the harsh reality that they are willing to kill anyone who attempts to break into their exclusive world.
Cocker also takes a dig at the free market and its proponents, stating that it is "the ideal way to order the world" only if it makes money, even if it is not moral or ethical. He urges people to use their right to protest, but warns that their voices may not be heard so long as those in power are "still running the world." Ultimately, Jarvis Cocker's "Running the World" is a cynical and bitter commentary on political and economic inequality that still resonates today.

Anyone who can get anthropologically into a song is a genius.

I know you wrote this a year ago, but that fact alone is one of the (many) reasons I love this song. I never expected to hear "anthropologically unjust" in a song, and I never would have expected it to work SO WELL. Gotta love Jarvis.
