MAD WORLD
Jasmine-thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
Find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
Find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very, very
Mad world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Mad World by Jasmine Thompson paints a picture of a bleak and hopeless world where everyone is just going through the motions of life. The first two lines describe a world filled with familiar faces, but all tired and worn out, and going nowhere in life. The line "their tears are filling up their glasses" shows that the people have given up and are numbing their pain with alcohol. The singer expresses their desire to escape from this world - "Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow No tomorrow, no tomorrow."

The second verse describes a child's innocent birthday celebration, and implies that the child's happiness is fleeting and temporary as they still have to face the harsh reality of the world. The singer then talks about their experience in school where they felt invisible and unheard, not knowing their place in the world. Throughout the song, the singer expresses their mixed emotions of finding the state of the world both funny and sad, while also acknowledging the allure of death as an escape from the madness.

Overall, the song captures the feeling of emptiness and hopelessness that many people experience in a world that can seem mundane, cruel, and overwhelming. It speaks of the duality and complexity of human emotions in a world that often feels chaotic and confusing.

If you've already heard one version, it's not easy to still be open to an alternative new version. But I will give it a try. The voice is excellent. No distracting show around it is good too. My problem is that the song needs wisdom for credibility. That usually means an older age to look back at the past life. Learning the lessons and prepare for post life. I admit, not every old person is wise, and sometimes very young people are further along than others (Greta Thunberg, for example). Call me limited and unfair, but I think in 10 years she can make it even more impressive. It's my humble opinion.

Actually I'm pretty sure this is using audio from a video she recorded at 13

This song is 40(!) years old and it STILL hits you right in the gut. Amazing!

Especially the Michael Andrews-arranged "slow" version (first sung by Gary Jules.) The original fast version is good, but the song takes on a completely different meaning slowed down and acoustic.

D'habitude je n'aime pas trop les reprises, mais quelques-unes font exception et la voix de Jasmine sur cette chanson est juste magnifique.
