Drop Your Guard
Jasmine Thompson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Still waters run deep
Why do you always hide from me
How do you keep
All your troubles underneath
Emotion is a wild thing
I'm trying not to feel it
We get on
Yeah somehow we get by
We're alright 'cause

Love runs deep
Deeper than the darker sea
So drop your guard
Why do you have to be so hard

Those paper dolls
Hold each other by the hand
One cut and they break
I'm trying to make you understand
Emotion is a wild thing
Together we can tame it
Look again
Don't you realise
It's in my eyes

Love runs deep
Deeper than the darker sea
So drop your guard
Why do you have to be so hard

I wasn't asking you to open up
To open up
It's not my business anyway
It's just that when you're hurting
It's like I'm always searching
For the right words to say
We have an unspoken rule
That you're always so cruel
Maybe I'm wrong to believe
But in my dreams

Our love runs deep
Deeper than the darker sea
So drop your guard
Why do you have to be so hard
Our love runs deep
Deeper than the darker sea

So drop your guard
Why do you have to be so hard

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jasmine Thompson’s song Drop Your Guard express a plea from the singer to a person who seems to always hide their troubles under the surface. The singer seems to be in a relationship with this person, and they are trying to deepen their emotional bond. They use the metaphor of paper dolls holding hands to describe the fragility of feeling, and the difficulty in maintaining that bond when one of them is being hard and defensive. They implore this person to trust them, to drop their guard, and to be vulnerable because love, according to the singer, runs deep, deeper than the darker sea.

The theme of the song is about the importance of emotional vulnerability in a relationship. The singer values the unspoken rule of exposing their feelings in order to deepen the bond between them. The song suggests that unless they are able to trust one another and speak honestly about their feelings, the relationship may break, just like the paper dolls that are delicate and easily broken. The singer wants them to tame their emotions together and seek to understand one another through verbal unfoldment. The lyrics remind us that love may take many forms - deep, passionate, sacrificial, and forgiving. What is important is that both people in the relationship are willing to be vulnerable with each other and to nurture their bond.

Do you remember the 9th of October 2010?
Open Mic UK 2010, Guildhall, Plymouth, UK ?
And now.....
Look at you.... look at this video.....
You´ve been grown up so quick. You looks like 19 or 20.
It´s unbelievable what happend to your voice, your tone, your styling, everything of you in the last 4 years.
That´s completely stunning to me  :-)

Every time i hear this song i close my eyes, calm down from my daily stress
and get so relaxed, leaving me sitting here with goosebumps.

Thank you very much for this.
Hope to hear more of you in the near future.

Sincerely yours.

I have the opportunity to listen to Drop Your Guard often (it is the first song in her album Another Bundle of Tantrums). I received a different perspective a few days ago.

Jasmine when you sing any song regardless of how difficult, it occurs as anything but complex as you simply touch or hold each note with ease. It was an eight-year-old who covered this song extremely well, that gave me a completely different perspective of your composition and songwriting.

Your creative capacity has a beautiful complexity to it. One of my other favorite singer/songwriters is Ella Henderson. Her style illustrates complexity where your writing and composition is every bit as complex, except the gentle ease in which you sing hides the extreme difficulty of the performance.

When Tally covered this song, her ability to effectively deal with the incredible number of note changes became apparent. This is an incredibly difficult song to sing.

Seeing this just gives me another distinction to revere you as an artist, Jasmine. Not that I required anything more... Kudos to Tally for taking it on and a special thanks as I now see something quite incredible in terms of quality in composing and songwriting :)
