Tattoos on This Town
Jason Aldean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's still black marks on that county road,
Where we drag raced our pick ups, and Mustangs
And weathered on the summer rain
And to this day up on that overpass,
Even underneath the new paint,
You can still see,
"Allie will you marry me?"
Take a ride, look around
And there ain't no doubt

It sure left it's mark on us, we sure left our mark on it
We let the world know we were here, with everything we did
We laid a lotta memories down, like tattoo's on this town

There's still a rope burn on that old branch,
That hangs over the river, I still got the scar
From swinging out a little too far
There ain't a corner of this hallowed ground,
That we ain't laughed or cried on, it's where we loved,
Lived and learned a lotta stuff
It's everything we're made of

It sure left it's mark on us, we sure left our mark on it
We let the world know we were here, with everything we did
We laid a lotta memories down, like tattoo's on this town
Like tattoo's on this town

Everywhere, it's where we are
It gets me right, in my heart

It sure left it's mark on us, we sure left our mark on it
We let the world know we were here, with everything we did
We laid a lotta memories down,

But we'll always be hangin' round, like tattoo's on this town
Like tattoo's on this town

Overall Meaning

In "Tattoos On This Town," Jason Aldean tells a nostalgic story about the memories he shared with his friends growing up in a small town. The lyrics poetically describe the physical marks that were left on the town by the group, which serve as reminders of all the special moments that were spent together. The opening lines refer to a county road where they used to race their pick-up trucks and Mustangs, and even though the road has been repainted, the remnants of their history still remain. The memory of a marriage proposal on an overpass is also highlighted, capturing a romantic moment in the town's history. The lyrics evoke a sense of loss and longing for the past, describing the memories as "tattoos on this town" that will never be erased.

The song is a reminder of how a place can hold so much significance and emotion for people, and how even the smallest moments in life can create cherished memories. The memories may be gone, and the individuals may have moved on, but the physical marks left behind serve as a constant reminder of the times they spent together. The song captures the feeling of the circularity of life, where even though things change, the memories will always exist in some form.

This song will forever be my favorite. The reason be is because my grandpa plays it whenever I'm at his house or we're polishing his guns. He says that on the oak tree outside of his house has a mark of his and my grandma's name. Thank you Jason for writing such beautiful music, it always brings my family closer. โ™ฅ

Jason Aldean is anti gun, anti second amendment. I love this song, I'm heartbroken by how lefitst the singer is.

@dawsonshreve2565

@RosieWilliamOlivia he hunts so how is he against guns

@RosieWilliamOlivia

@Dawson Shreve look it up, he's in favour of gun control laws. I don't know if he's left wing or not but they do tend to live by the "do as I say, not as I do" rule so maybe that's why, I really don't know.

This video by Director, Wes Edwards, is now 10 years old and is still a masterpiece to me. In just 3.5 minutes, he makes this cool Aldean song come to life with tremendous visual snapshots and a story line that exposes all our human emotions. I love the small town shots around town of a young couple just trying to get started out in life, especially the carving of the tree, while she wears his worn out ball cap and he has his dog tags around his neck. Her boy then gazes at the tree, sporting the same cap. It's raw and perfect!

It's hard to consciously realize it, but he finds a way to match the beat and transition of the music with the video cuts. I'm no expert, but it just seems to flow in a way that you can't keep your eyes off it. The image of the military knocking on her door, matched perfectly with a cymbal sound, is long lasting and powerful. I noticed that it took me a good 5-10 replays of this entire video to catch almost everything. I love coming back to watch it from time to time.

This audio/video journey reminds us that life can't always stay the same and time will always march into the future. Will you "leave your mark on it"?

@countryhitalbum

I love how simple this song is. Such a good way to get to the heart of worship. ๐Ÿ’•

@Daniel-36

Thank you but I wish people would say thank you for your sacrifice. The pain that we go through while some sit on their couch. People don't understand. Thank you Semper Fi.
